Hilarie Burton Morgan<\/strong><\/a> is recalling how she and One Tree Hill<\/em><\/a> costar Chad Michael Murray<\/strong><\/a> found out they weren\u2019t returning for season 7 of the long-running series \u2013 and fans are surprised by her candid admission.<\/p>\n

During the Sunday, May 19, episode of her \u201cDrama Queens\u201d podcast<\/a>, Burton Morgan, 41, told cohosts and former costars Sophia Bush<\/strong> and Bethany Joy Lenz<\/strong> the story of how she and Murray, 42, allegedly weren\u2019t asked back when the show was renewed for another season.<\/p>\n

Noting that they were filming a flashback scene in a diner with their respective characters, Peyton Sawyer and Lucas Scott, for season 6, episode 21, Burton Morgan explained that \u201call of a sudden\u201d their producer, Greg Prange<\/strong>, announced to everyone that the show had been picked up for a seventh season.<\/p>\n

\u201cChad looks at me and he\u2019s like, \u2018Have you even gotten an offer? I was like, \u2018No,\u2019 and he\u2019s like, \u2018I haven\u2019t gotten an offer,’\u201d she began. \u201cAnd so around us, everyone is hugging and high-fiving. I mean, it felt like balloons were dropping from the ceiling. Everybody was so f\u2013king pumped. And he and I just kind of sat there and we knew it was coming.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt\u2019s hard to look back at teen dramas without remembering One Tree Hill, and decades later fans are still talking about its explosive cast. The series, created by Mark Schwahn, aired for nine seasons from 2003 to 2012. It premiered on The WB then moved over to The CW in 2006 when The WB was [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She added, \u201cAnd he and I were the highest paid actors on the show, and we knew we were on the chopping block.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later in the episode, Burton Morgan went on to tell Bush, 41, and Lenz, 43, that the decision to not have her return to the show was a blessing in disguise.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think this is the closure that I needed because I always knew that I was right to walk away from this situation because it was awful \u2013 and my life is awesome because of that betrayal,\u201d she said. \u201cI met my husband [Jeffrey Dean Morgan<\/strong>], I had my kids, I got to do White Collar<\/em> with Willie Garson<\/strong>. My life is so much better because I was betrayed here. And that\u2019s the thing that maybe I want anybody that listens to this to walk away with. It\u2019s like the betrayal just opened the door for all the awesome s\u2013t that I have now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans were quick to comment on Burton Morgan\u2019s side of the story, as many followers initially thought that the Grimoire Girl<\/em> author and Murray chose to leave the show on their own.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always thought it was her decision to leave \u2026 now I\u2019m mad they didn\u2019t bring Peyton back along with Lucas later on,\u201d wrote one fan, who was referring to Murray\u2019s one-episode return as a guest star in the ninth and final season.<\/p>\n

The characters on One Tree Hill were in countless love triangles, went on romantic excursions and even got married in high school. In real life, things weren\u2019t always so magical. Although [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Another added, \u201cSuch a mistake to not bring back Chad and Hilarie. I was so upset and the show just felt different after they left.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series, created by Mark Schwahn<\/strong>, aired for nine seasons from 2003 to 2012. The show followed two half-brothers, Lucas Scott (Murray) and Nathan Scott (James Lafferty<\/strong>), as they struggled to coexist in the same town \u2014 at high school and on their basketball team.<\/p>\n

Paul Johansson<\/strong>, Craig Sheffer<\/strong>, Moira Kelly<\/strong>, Antwon Tanner<\/strong>, Lee Norris<\/strong> and Barbara Alyn Woods<\/strong> also made up the main cast when the series debuted.<\/p>\n

After a five-year time jump between season 4 and season 5, fans saw the former high school students navigate adulthood after returning to their (fictional) hometown of Tree Hill, North Carolina.<\/p>\n

During an appearance on Dax Shepard<\/strong>\u2018s \u201cArmchair Expert\u201d podcast in 2018, Bush recalled how the the producers \u201cmade practice of taking advantage of people\u2019s personal lives\u201d for storylines.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFor the cast of One Tree Hill, the line between fact and fiction was often blurred. The show\u2019s stars claim that events from their real lives \u2014 from their personal interests to their traumas \u2014 would find their way into their characters\u2019 storylines. \u201c[The producers] made practice of taking advantage of people\u2019s personal lives,\u201d Sophia [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t OK. It was opportunistic and ugly and when you run a show, you\u2019re like a parent, you\u2019re supposed to protect your flock, and it was the opposite of that,\u201d she told the Parenthood<\/em> alum. \u201cI think they kind of lived for the drama.\u201d<\/p>\n
