As noted in the lawsuit, the families accuse Activision and Meta of \u201cgrooming\u201d young men and putting them on a path toward violent acts. On May 24th, 2022, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, killing 21.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The lawsuit says that the gunman played <em>Call of Duty <\/em>\u201cobsessively, developed skill as a marksman, and obtained rewards that become available only after a substantial time investment.\u201d It also claims that the game features the AR-15 used in the shooting. At the same time, the lawsuit alleges that \u201cthe shooter was being courted through explicit, aggressive marketing\u201d on Instagram that showed \u201chundreds of images depicting and venerating the thrill of combat.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote mb-20\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup relative bg-repeating-lines-dark bg-[length:1px_1.2em] pb-8 font-polysans text-28 font-medium leading-120 tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20  dark:bg-repeating-lines-light dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple\">\u201cActivision should stop training and habituating kids to kill\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">In addition to Activision and Meta, the families of the Uvalde victims are also suing Daniel Defense, the gun company that made the AR-15 used in the shooting. The lawsuit alleges Daniel Defense promotes its weapons to minors on Instagram through posts \u201cglorifying\u201d combat. Meta\u2019s rules <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/06\/09\/facebook-gun-sellers-10-strikes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theoretically<\/a> ban companies from selling guns on its platforms, though, and the gunman purchased the AR-15 from Daniel Defense\u2019s website \u2014 not through Instagram. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cCompanies like Instagram and Activision do more than just allow gun companies to reach consumers \u2014 they underwrite and mainstream violence to struggling adolescents,\u201d wrote Josh Koskoff, the attorney for the Uvalde families. \u201cInstagram should stop enabling the marketing of AR-15s to kids by gun companies; and Activision should stop training and habituating kids to kill.
