From Mitch McConnell<\/strong> to the conservative wing of the Supreme Court, there are many people who deserve blame for the overturn of Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/a> in June 2022. One person who deserves much of that blame is Donald Trump,<\/strong> who vowed while first running for president to exclusively nominate antiabortion justices, and then did exactly that. And now, nearly two years after the constitutional right to an abortion was scrapped, the man largely responsible is suggesting birth control could be on the table.<\/p>\n In an interview on Pittsburgh\u2019s KDKA news station, Trump was asked, \u201cDo you support any restrictions on a person\u2019s right to contraception?\u201d And his answer was not a resounding \u201cno.\u201d Instead, he responded: \u201cWe\u2019re looking at that, and I\u2019m gonna have a policy on that very shortly, and I think it\u2019s something that you\u2019ll find\u00a0interesting. And it\u2019s another issue that\u2019s very interesting, but you will find it,\u00a0I think, very smart;\u00a0I think it\u2019s a smart decision. But we\u2019ll be releasing it very soon.\u201d<\/p>\n This content can also be viewed on the site it originates<\/a> from.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Asked if he was implying that he would support states\u2019 choices to ban certain contraceptives, Trump merely said<\/a> he\u2019d be providing more details \u201cwithin a week or so,\u201d adding: \u201cThings really do have a lot to do with the states, and some states are going to have different policy than others.\u201d<\/p>\n Obviously, that\u2019s a hugely chilling thing for a man who could soon be president (again) to say. After his comments emerged, Trump took to Truth Social to declare<\/a>: \u201cI HAVE NEVER, AND WILL NEVER ADVOCATE IMPOSING RESTRICTIONS ON BIRTH CONTROL, or other contraceptives. This is a Democrat fabricated lie, MISINFORMATION\/DISINFORMATION, because they have nothing else to run on except FAILURE, POVERTY, AND DEATH. I DO NOT SUPPORT A BAN ON BIRTH CONTROL, AND NEITHER WILL THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!\u201d<\/p>\n Why didn\u2019t Trump just say that in the interview? Only he knows. Regardless, it\u2019s little comfort to hear that the ex-president supposedly won\u2019t \u201cadvocate\u201d for restrictions on birth control, given that his official stance on reproductive rights is that he\u2019s more than happy to let states do whatever they want<\/a>.<\/p>\n In a Time<\/em> interview published last month, Trump said<\/a> the federal government should not get involved in states\u2019 enactments of partial or total abortion bans, even if said states take the dystopian step of monitoring pregnancies so that they can prosecute anyone who obtains an abortion after the law says they can. \u201cI think they might do that,\u201d Trump said of the disturbing prospect. Asked if he was comfortable with states criminally charging women who obtain abortions after the law allows, he said: \u201cIt\u2019s irrelevant whether I\u2019m comfortable or not. It\u2019s totally irrelevant, because the states are going to make those decisions.\u201d (As\u00a0Time<\/em>\u00a0noted, President\u00a0Joe Biden<\/strong>\u00a0\u201chas said he would fight state antiabortion measures in court and with regulation.\u201d)<\/p>\n Trump may think it helps him politically to suggest he might restrict access to contraception, as he did in the KDKA interview, but to actually do so would be hugely unpopular. As The<\/em> Washington Post<\/em> notes<\/a>, a 2023 Gallup poll showed that a whopping 88% of Americans\u2014including 86% of Republicans\u2014\u201csaid birth control was morally acceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n In a statement, a Biden campaign spokeswoman said, \u201cWomen across the country are already suffering from Donald Trump\u2019s post-Roe<\/em>\u00a0nightmare, and if he wins a second term, it\u2019s clear he wants to go even further by restricting access to birth control and emergency contraceptives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\nX content<\/h4>\n
