Sarah Paulson<\/strong><\/a> revealed the secret to her nine-year relationship with partner Holland Taylor<\/strong>, and it involves a lot of space.<\/p>\n \u201cWe don\u2019t live together,\u201d Sarah, 49, said during her appearance on the Monday, May 13, episode of the \u201cSmartLess<\/a>\u201d podcast. \u201cThat\u2019s the secret to it. Holland and I spend plenty of time together, but we don\u2019t live in the same house.\u201d<\/p>\n The American Horror Story<\/em> star explained that the reasoning behind their decision was because of her and Holland\u2019s differing history of past relationships.<\/p>\n \u201cHolland, before me, hasn\u2019t been in a ton of long-term relationships, whereas Holland is my third more than five-year relationship,\u201d Sarah told \u201cSmartLess\u201d hosts Jason Bateman<\/strong>, Will Arnett<\/strong> and Sean Hayes<\/strong>. \u201cI tend to do that and have more experience doing that, Holland hasn\u2019t. So to get to be her age and sort of not having really cohabited with someone for a long time \u2014 I think it was a lot to sort of have me and all my me-ness in her space.\u201d<\/p>\n However, just because Sarah and Holland, 81, don\u2019t cohabitate, it doesn\u2019t mean that the couple is lacking any romance in their relationship.<\/p>\n \u201cMy favorite thing to do \u2014 we fall asleep holding hands,\u201d Sarah said. \u201cI like to sleep near her.\u201d<\/p>\n When Sarah and the Legally Blonde<\/em> star first met in 2005, they were both dating other people. Ten years later, their paths crossed again and sparks flew. In November 2015, Holland teased that she was dating a younger woman during an appearance on the radio station WNYC, per People<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s a very big age difference between us<\/a> which I\u2019m sure shocks a lot of people, and it startles me. But as they say, \u2018If she dies, she dies,\u2019 \u201d Holland joked at the time.<\/p>\n In January 2016, the couple made their red carpet debut at the Critics Choice Awards, and two months later, Sarah opened up about her and Holland\u2019s romance.<\/p>\n \u201cIf my life choices had to be predicted based on what was expected from me from a community on either side, that\u2019s going to make me feel really straitjacketed, and I don\u2019t want to feel that,\u201d Sarah told The New York Times<\/em><\/a> in an article published on March 3, 2016. \u201cWhat I can say absolutely is that I am in love, and that person happens to be Holland Taylor.\u201d<\/p>\n Since then, neither Holland or Sarah have been shy about their relationship<\/a>. In January 2017, Holland described Sarah as her \u201cwonderful love\u201d on Radio Andy\u2019s \u201cSandyland<\/a>\u201d broadcast.<\/p>\n Recently, Sarah shared a birthday tribute to her girlfriend via Instagram<\/a> on January 14, and she joked about Holland having her eyes closed in one of the photos.<\/p>\n \u201cYou are, quite simply- my world.
