American Idol<\/em><\/a> crowned a new champion during the season 22 finale on Sunday, May 19, as Abi Carter<\/strong>, Will Moseley<\/strong> and Jack Blocker<\/strong> competed for the title.\n<\/p>\n

Carter was announced as the winner following a heartfelt performance of her original song \u201cThis Isn\u2019t Over.\u201d After she was deemed the victor, she sang Billie Eilish<\/strong>\u2018s \u201cWhat Was I Made For?\u201d through tears. (Moseley finished in second, while Blocker placed third.)<\/p>\n

In addition to naming a new winner, the finale marked Katy Perry<\/strong>\u2019s last episode as a judge after seven seasons in the role. The singer, 39, announced in February that she planned to leave the ABC reality competition series at the end of season 22 and focus on recording new music of her own. (She released her last album, Smile<\/em>, back in 2020.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI think this probably will be \u2026 my last season for Idol<\/em><\/a>,\u201d she revealed during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live<\/em>. \u201cI mean, I love Idol<\/em> so much. It\u2019s connected me with, like, the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat, you know what I\u2019m saying?\u201d<\/p>\n

Perry then hinted that her fellow judges, Lionel Richie<\/strong> and Luke Bryan<\/strong>, were unaware of her decision. \u201cWell, they\u2019ll find out tonight,\u201d she said of their reactions to news of her impending departure. \u201cThey know that I have some things planned for this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, Perry insisted that American Idol<\/em> would always hold a special place in her heart. \u201cI love the show so much,\u201d she added. \u201cBut I wanna go and see the world and maybe bring new music. Maybe I\u2019ll come back if they\u2019ll have me one day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later that month, Richie, 74, spoke out about Perry\u2019s upcoming exit<\/a> from the show. \u201cI\u2019m not mad,\u201d he insisted on Jimmy Kimmel Live<\/em>. \u201cIt just made me run off the road when I first heard about it. My phone blew up.\u201d<\/p>\n
