Greetings from the movies corner<\/a> of the pop culture world. You remember movies, right? All of three years ago, the brightest and the best offerings<\/a> shined on the big screen. (Your diverse 2019 offerings included universally acclaimed hits such as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Knives Out<\/em> and Parasite<\/em>.)<\/p>\n However, the coronavirus pandemic changed everything: Who needs to go to the movie theater to pay money to see Cate Blanchett<\/strong><\/a> in the erudite and inaccessible drama TAR<\/em> when the super-juicy White Lotus<\/em><\/a> and The Crown<\/em><\/a> are available from right there on the couch?<\/p>\n The industry still hasn\u2019t totally recovered \u2014 but that\u2019s not to say 2022 movies<\/a> haven\u2019t delivered the goods. Think all the way back to last January and February, i.e., the dumping ground for cinema after all those prestige and popular holiday releases. We got a totally serviceable Scream<\/em><\/a> installment (starring a pre-Wednesday<\/em><\/a> Jenna Ortega<\/strong><\/a>), Channing Tatum<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s charming comeback vehicle in Dog<\/em>, the ever-reliable J. Lo<\/strong><\/a> playing yet another bride in Marry Me<\/em><\/a> and even the stupidly amazing Jackass Forever<\/em>. And though the old-school movie-going experience is changing, audiences still turned out to see old-school movie stars<\/a> in their element. Think Brad Pitt<\/strong><\/a> (Bullet Train<\/em>), Sandra Bullock<\/strong><\/a> (The Lost City<\/em>) and George Clooney<\/strong><\/a> and Julia Roberts<\/strong><\/a> (Ticket to Paradise<\/em>). And, of course, perhaps our last true movie star flew higher than anyone.<\/p>\n This brings us to another year-end roundup. The 2022 crop ranges from a dazzling biopic to an unconventional rom-com<\/a> to hard-hitting dramas<\/a>. They made us laugh and learn and feel a gamut of emotions and, well, take our breaths away.<\/p>\n Just two quick codas: 1. This list was compiled before the press screening of Avatar: The Way of Water<\/em>. Heard good things! 2. Like the flawed King of Rock and Roll himself, you can\u2019t help falling in love with it. Austin Butler<\/strong><\/a> rises to the occasion playing Elvis Presley, a star whose swagger eventually gives way to crushing vulnerability. (Available for rental and streaming on HBO Max)<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCredit:<\/em> Universal Pictures\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n Steven Spielberg<\/strong><\/a> cowrote and directed a magnificent autobiographical nod to his two religions: Judaism and cinema. In the process, he shines a light on the influence of his mismatched parents \u2014 played with aplomb by Michelle Williams<\/strong><\/a> and Paul Dano<\/strong><\/a>. This one gets better as it goes long and culminates in the year\u2019s most triumphant closing sequence. What happens next is a mesmerizing mix of comedy and tragedy. But it\u2019s the interpersonal drama that really resonates. The events are told without any distracting stylistic bells and whistles, forcing us to reckon with a time that many would prefer to forget. One villain; many, many heroines. Their 18-day ordeal is painstakingly recreated in a harrowing yet truly inspiring white-knuckler courtesy of Apollo 13<\/em> director Ron Howard<\/strong><\/a>.
