Fire Country<\/em> ended its second season with so many questions \u2014 which is why Us<\/em> is delivering the answers.<\/p>\n

Executive producer and showrunner Tia Napolitano<\/strong> weighed in on the direction of the CBS show after season 2 ended on Friday, May 17, with Bode (Max Thieriot<\/strong><\/a>) planning his path back to becoming a firefighter<\/a> after walking out of Gabriela\u2019s (Stephanie Arcila<\/strong>) wedding.<\/p>\n

With so many storylines still up in the air, Napolitano exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> about Fire Country<\/em>\u2018s evolution and how a shortened episode order affected the sophomore season<\/a> as a whole.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the get, we just knew we had to make 10 very special episodes. We only had 10, so the bases are loaded,\u201d Napolitano explained about how the cast and crew came together. \u201cWe\u2019re at firenado by episode 5 and the next episode was out Sheriff Country [backdoor pilot].\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs networks make decisions about their programming, Us Weekly will continue to track what has been renewed and which TV shows have been canceled. Slow Horses was the first show to score a renewal in 2024. In early January, Apple TV+ picked up the series for a fifth season, which will be based on Mick [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There were continuous attempts to make sure everyone was featured despite the setback, adding, \u201cI think we included everything we wanted to. We just packed it in there. So all the episodes are very dense and satisfying.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Bode and Gabriela\u2019s arcs, viewers saw Manny (Kevin Alejandro<\/strong>) turn himself into the police after running from the law. But he got the chance to walk his daughter, Gabriela, down the aisle and then Manny was immediately on his way to prison.<\/a><\/p>\n

Napolitano reflected on the big swings taking place on the show each week.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery season is a learning of\u2019 what do we do great [and] what can we do better next year?\u2019 If you think we can never really rest easy on an action show, it\u2019s always how can we do a better, smarter, faster and continue to keep everyone happy and safe,\u201d she detailed. \u201cYou just need to be open to learning over and over and over again on an action show.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Led to the Big Bode Decision?<\/h3>\n

Before the finale, Bode was surprised with an early release from Three Rock because he saved dad Vince\u2019s (Billy Burke<\/strong>) life<\/a>. The good news doesn\u2019t mean Bode\u2019s road ahead won\u2019t be long and sometimes quite difficult.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe felt like by the end of season 2, we just had been craving it and craving it and craving it for so long,\u201d Napolitano noted. \u201cAnd our show is all about redemption and we get Bode to this place where he\u2019s really earning it and changing and really growing. We wanted that wish fulfillment and that satisfaction of, Finally, this man gets to no longer be incarcerated.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFire Country puts in a lot of work to make their cast look nearly unrecognizable on the show. The CBS series, which premiered in 2022, follows inmate Bode (Max Thieriot) as he gets a chance to shorten his prison sentence by volunteering for the California Conservation Camp Program. Bode gets assigned to his hometown where [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

How Will Bode Evolve From Here?<\/h3>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s freeing to have [Bode] out. The way it is now, we lived in two worlds and Bode \u2014 who is the lead of the show \u2014 lived almost alone. He would have scenes with Freddy or Cole or Eve or Manny, but he couldn\u2019t be with the entire group,\u201d Napolitano noted. \u201cAnd we would have these great scenes of our characters having fun. Gabriela, Eve and Jake joking around or making food or enjoying a night at Smokey\u2019s and Bode couldn\u2019t be a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The executive producer is excited to include Bode in the group moments<\/a>, adding, \u201cI think every set he\u2019s on that we haven\u2019t seen him on yet as a free person is just fan candy and really fun. We just want to make sure that we appreciate how special it is every time those things happen for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Are Bode\u2019s Next Steps?<\/h3>\n

Bode took part in a firefighting program while incarcerated but it won\u2019t be as easy for him to join the force now that he is out.<\/p>\n

\u201cBode\u2019s journey from free citizen to firefighter is going to be a long one. We\u2019ve covered on the show how hard it is. There\u2019s so many hoops and red tape to get through to get your record expunged as an inmate,\u201d Napolitano explained. \u201cI think seeing him fight for that is fighting for himself. They become one and the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

The motivation behind Bode\u2019s decision<\/a> is a welcome change.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn season 1 and 2, he had a hard time just improving himself for the sake of himself. I think going after the goal he wants is, in a wonderful way, selfish for Bode,\u201d she noted. \u201cThere are a lot of programs to transition people out of the inmate firefighter program to real firefighters. [He has] his family and the fire station is basically the Leone house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Napolitano reassured fans that they shouldn\u2019t be worried about Bode not fighting fires. \u201cHe\u2019s going to be all up in there,\u201d she quipped. \u201cHe\u2019s definitely going to be firefighting curious until he\u2019s actually able to officially hold a hose again.\u201d<\/p>\n

How Free Is Bode, Really?<\/h3>\n

According to Napolitano, just because Bode is out now doesn\u2019t mean he is out for good.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrison \u2014 at least via fire camp \u2014 is always going to be part of the show. It\u2019s part of the DNA of the show,\u201d she told Us<\/em>. \u201cI have no hard line about Bode not going back to prison at this point. We\u2019re only in season 2, but I do know from this point forward I want to see him free for a good minute \u2014 if not forever. Just to really enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Are Bode\u2019s Chances With Gabriela?<\/h3>\n

In the season 2 finale, Bode left before Gabriela officially became<\/a> a married woman. That led to questions about whether Gabriela went through with exchanging vows with Diego or whether she got cold feet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love a good cliffhanger \u2014 especially a romantic cliffhanger. I think we\u2019ve been teasing Bode and Gabriela since the pilots and to still not get that answer and to want them to be together so badly,\u201d Napolitano noted. \u201cBut they\u2019re apart and you don\u2019t know how it ends. It just felt like a really propulsive way to throw us into season 3.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cWe wanted to end on an aspirational, hopeful note. It feels so good to see the Bode we\u2019ve been rooting for. To see him root for himself and advocate for himself and know what he wants and go for it. It just felt like, \u2018Let\u2019s go season 3!’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What Is the Season 3 Vision After Fire Country\u2019s Renewal?<\/h3>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t tease too much. Our show is always going to be about redemption. That\u2019s the heartbeat of our show,\u201d Napolitano shared. \u201cSo that will continue to be true. And I talk about wish fulfillment. I think there is going to be a little bit of care for what you wish for in season three.\u201d<\/p>\n

How Do Manny\u2019s Issues Play Out?<\/h3>\n

After losing his leadership position<\/a> at Three Rock, Manny started out the second season at a crossroads. His decision to punch Luke resulted in him getting a warrant put out for his arrest and in the season 2 finale Manny was taken into custody.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll see Manny\u2019s going to get put through his paces. I\u2019m most interested in seeing if Manny can talk the talk about redemption. Can he walk the walk? Can he dust himself off and get back up the way we want him to?\u201d the executive producer noted. \u201cWhat does Manny\u2019s redemption story look like all over again? And we will be on that journey with him every step of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Season 2 of Fire Country<\/em> felt like a game of musical chairs<\/a>. After Sharon told Luke she wanted her job back \u2014 which was his now \u2014 Napolitano discussed how that will play out in the third season.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to lean into that next season of the shuffling that\u2019s happened and people trading titles and positions,\u201d she shared. \u201cAnd is it that easy? I love the confidence that [Sharon has] assured. So self-assured that she thinks she can just take it.\u201d<\/p>\n
