And automakers continue to source materials from some of the worst offenders, <em>The Verge<\/em> finds. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">BHRRC has documented 631 allegations of human rights abuses since 2010 for seven key minerals used in electric vehicles, rechargeable batteries, and renewable energy technologies. Many of the allegations were made against a small group of companies, which <em>The Verge<\/em> was able to link to three of the world\u2019s biggest EV manufacturers: Volkswagen Group, Tesla, and BYD. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cThings are not improving,\u201d said Caroline Avan, head of natural resources and just transition at BHRRC. The need for more renewable energy and clean transportation is evident, but those technologies shouldn\u2019t come at the expense of people who live and work in places where companies source their raw materials, she said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component clear-both block md:float-left md:mr-30 md:w-[320px] lg:-ml-100\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote mb-20\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup relative bg-repeating-lines-dark bg-[length:1px_1.2em] pb-8 font-polysans text-28 font-medium leading-120 tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20  dark:bg-repeating-lines-light dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple\">\u201cThings are not improving.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cThe fight against climate change is a human rights imperative at this point in time, but it should not be seen as a license to just disregard human rights in mining operations,\u201d Avan said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">An electric vehicle requires about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/the-role-of-critical-minerals-in-clean-energy-transitions\/executive-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">six times<\/a> as many minerals as a typical gas-guzzling car. Demand for critical minerals used in EVs and battery storage for renewable energy could grow tenfold by 2040, under a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-energy-and-climate-model\/stated-policies-scenario-steps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conservative<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/the-role-of-critical-minerals-in-clean-energy-transitions\/mineral-requirements-for-clean-energy-transitions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimate<\/a> by the International Energy Agency. Scrambling to secure all those minerals without taking the time to make sure they\u2019re mined humanely is where problems arise.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">BHRRC\u2019s latest report includes potential abuses linked to the mining of seven minerals: bauxite, cobalt, copper, lithium, manganese, nickel, and zinc. It\u2019s been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/from-us\/transition-minerals-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tracking those allegations<\/a> since 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/from-us\/transition-minerals-tracker\/methodology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">using publicly available records<\/a>, including court documents and regulatory resources, as well as reports from other nongovernmental organizations and media outlets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">It found 91 more allegations in the past year alone, including a \u201cmarked increase in labour rights violations and worker deaths\u201d that made up roughly 40 percent of the new allegations in 2023. Across its entire data set going back to 2010, labor violations including 53 work-related deaths make up a quarter of all allegations. State-owned China Minmetals now leads the pack, topping Swiss multinational mining giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/15\/23760915\/tesla-supplier-glencore-human-rights-abuse-allegations-battery-minerals-mining-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glencore<\/a>, which ranked highest over the past two years. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Combing through sustainability reports and media coverage of the world\u2019s top three EV manufacturers, <em>The Verge<\/em> found a history of deals with Glencore and China Minmetals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">To drive its EV ambitions, Volkswagen entered into an agreement with Glencore and battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) back in 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/amp\/idUKKBN19R20B\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Reuters <\/em>reported<\/a>. Under the agreement, CATL would buy 20,000 metric tons of cobalt products from Glencore for Volkswagen\u2019s EV batteries. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">In 2023, VW\u2019s battery division PowerCo initially\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/deals\/glencore-automakers-back-1-bln-nickel-copper-spac-deal-brazil-2023-06-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agreed to back a SPAC deal alongside Glencore<\/a> and Stellantis\u00a0to buy nickel and copper mines in Brazil \u2014 although the deal reportedly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/deals\/1-bln-metals-spac-deal-backed-by-glencore-automakers-collapses-2023-09-28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fell through<\/a> later that year over price squabbles. Volkswagen has also identified gold sourced by Glencore in its supply chain, according to its 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volkswagen-group.com\/en\/publications\/more\/responsible-raw-materials-report-2711\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Responsible Raw Materials Report<\/a>. The company declined to comment on BHRRC\u2019s findings but has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplychaindive.com\/news\/volkswagen-overhauls-human-rights-due-diligence-materials-supply-chain\/688299\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that it is working to comply with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moodys.com\/web\/en\/us\/kyc\/resources\/insights\/year-on-introduction-german-supply-chain-due-diligence-act.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany\u2019s new Supply Chain Due Diligence Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Tesla buys nickel from a Glencore mine in Australia and cobalt from two Glencore mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo according to the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/ns_videos\/2021-tesla-impact-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/ns_videos\/2022-tesla-impact-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a>\u00a0impact reports.\u00a0In 2022, workers at one of those cobalt mines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/2\/15\/22933022\/cobalt-mining-ev-electriv-vehicle-working-conditions-congo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spoke to <em>The Verge<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>about<em> <\/em>unsafe working conditions\u00a0without adequate water or breaks and with little food or pay. Cobalt is often called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/au\/podcast\/the-blood-diamond-of-batteries\/id1346207297?i=1000545221361\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the blood diamond of batteries<\/a>\u201d because of the dangers workers face mining it. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Neither Tesla nor Glencore responded immediately to requests for comment from <em>The Verge<\/em>. Tesla\u2019s 2022 impact report explains that the company conducts audits of its suppliers to improve working conditions at each site and make sure \u201ccorrective actions\u201d are taken to address any problems. It touts \u201cworking with suppliers where issues are found rather than walking away.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">In the year since then, China\u2019s BYD overtook Tesla to become the world\u2019s biggest seller of EVs \u2014 despite its vehicles being unavailable in the US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/5\/14\/24156249\/us-biden-china-tariffs-ev-solar-battery-semiconductor-critical-minerals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">due to high tariffs<\/a>. China Minmetals also inched past Glencore this year, racking up more allegations of abuse than any other company in BHRRC\u2019s report. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">BYD doesn\u2019t name its more than 10,000 suppliers in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bydglobal.com\/cn\/en\/BYD_ENSocialResponsibility\/SocietyDevelopment_mob.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 CSR<\/a> report (Tesla and Volkswagen only give a partial list in their reports). But China Minmetals subsidiary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/marketintelligence\/en\/news-insights\/blog\/japan-ma-by-the-numbers-q4-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hunan Changyuan Lico\u00a0is reportedly<\/a> one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yicaiglobal.com\/news\/20230518-04-changyuan-lico-to-build-usd14-billion-lithium-battery-materials-plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BYD\u2019s lithium battery material suppliers<\/a>. BYD didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/2\/27\/24084576\/ford-mercedes-tesla-ev-supply-chain-leaderboard-climate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">separate report<\/a> by environmental and human rights groups published in February ranked car companies based on how much progress they\u2019ve made to eliminate environmental harms and human rights abuses. Tesla ranked third highest, behind Ford and Mercedes-Benz, in that assessment. Volkswagen ranked sixth, and BYD came in 16th <a href=\"https:\/\/leadthecharge.org\/scorecards\/?_order=total_high_low\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">out of 18 companies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Automakers certainly aren\u2019t the only industry with a lot of work to do to prevent abuse along their supply chains. Rechargeable batteries that power many of the gadgets in our lives are made with a lot of the same materials cited in these reports. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Governments, mining companies, and manufacturers who buy their goods all need to take action to stop abuse, BHRRC\u2019s Avan says. That includes adopting policies that make human rights a priority and that empower people to have a say in projects that might affect their communities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201c[When it comes to] a lot of egregious and gross negligence in occupational health and safety at mining sites, this is not rocket science. Those things can be fixed,\u201d Avan says. \u201cWhat [manufacturers] should be doing is engaging with the mining sector, asking questions, and putting in front of them the requirements and expectations for better protection of human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>The Verge<\/em> reached out for comment to each of the 10 companies BHRRC lists as having the most human rights allegations against them.
