Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1602407011106361362?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1602407011106361362%7Ctwgr%5E7bb32be8d8c29e66df8e226711823db6c7112c41%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftechcrunch.com%2F2022%2F12%2F12%2Felon-says-twitter-will-remove-all-legacy-verifications-in-a-few-months%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a> in December that the company would remove those checks \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/12\/12\/elon-says-twitter-will-remove-all-legacy-verifications-in-a-few-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a few months<\/a>\u201d because \u201cthe way in which they were given out was corrupt and nonsensical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since then, legacy blue checkmark holders have been seeing a pop-up when they click on their checkmark that reads, \u201cThis is a legacy verified account. <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/12\/08\/schrodingers-blue-check-according-to-twitter-i-may-or-may-not-be-notable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It may or may not be notable<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before Musk acquired the company, Twitter used checkmarks to verify individuals and entities as active, authentic and notable accounts of interest. Verified checkmarks were doled out for free.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Twitter users can purchase a blue check through the Twitter Blue subscription model for $8 per month (iOS and Android signups will cost $11 per month, due to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/12\/07\/twitter-will-reportedly-charge-11-on-ios-for-blue-subscription-to-offset-app-store-fees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app store costs<\/a>). There are also <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/12\/13\/a-quick-guide-to-all-the-checkmarks-and-badges-on-twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other checkmark colors and badges<\/a> available for purchase to denote whether an account is a business or a government, for example.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter says the purchase of a checkmark gives users access to subscriber-only features like fewer ads on their timeline, prioritized ranking in conversations, bookmark folders, and the ability to craft long tweets, edit tweets and undo tweets.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes within hours of Twitter also announcing the availability of the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TwitterBlue\/status\/1638988196380827651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blue subscription globally<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter did not respond to TechCrunch\u2019s request for more information about how many users have already signed up for Twitter Blue.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed breakout embed-oembed embed--twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">On April 1st, we will begin winding down our legacy verified program and removing legacy verified checkmarks.
