Emmy is a contestant on season 22 of American Idol<\/em>. She is from Nashville, Tennessee, and was 24 years old when she auditioned for the show in 2023. Emmy works as a musician and even performed at the iconic Grand Ole Opry in Nashville in April 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n

Emmy\u2019s parents are Patsy<\/strong> (Loretta\u2019s daughter) and Philip Russell<\/strong>. They got married in 1998 and have six children, which means Emmy has five siblings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She earned a spot in the top 24, which is when the voting was put into the hands of viewers. Emmy made it into the top 20 during the April 14, 2024, episode.<\/span><\/p>\n

American Idol\u2019s Emmy Russell Is Related to Loretta Lynn<\/span><\/h3>\n

Emmy revealed her connection to Loretta during her American Idol<\/em> audition, which aired in February 2024. \u201cI don\u2019t really sing out as much anymore, but growing up I sang on the road,\u201d she told the judges. \u201cMy grandma\u2019s a country singer, so I kind of grew up singing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

When Luke Bryan<\/strong> asked Emmy to identify her grandmother and she said Loretta\u2019s name, the judges were shocked. \u201cI think there\u2019s a reason why I think I am a little timid and I think it is because I want to own my voice,\u201d Emmy explained. \u201cI want to own it. Later in the season, Emmy honored her late grandmother<\/a> by singing Loretta\u2019s song \u201cCoal Miner\u2019s Daughter\u201d for her top 8 performance. Judge Katy Perry<\/strong> made the song choice for Emmy and was in tears when she finished singing. Emmy also got emotional while rehearsing for the live show.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know \u2018Coal Miner\u2019s Daughter\u2019 like the back of my hand,\u201d she shared. \u201cI think I want to do it more like an ode, almost like a way of hugging her. In 2022, Emmy took the stage to honor her grandmother during CMT\u2019s Coal Miner\u2019s Daughter: A Celebration of the Life and Music of Loretta Lynn<\/em> special, which aired shortly after the legendary musician\u2019s death. Emmy performed with Willie Nelson\u2019s<\/strong> son Lukas Nelson<\/strong> at the concert. The pair sang \u201cLay Me Down,\u201d a collaboration between Loretta and Willie, which was featured on Loretta\u2019s 2016 album. Their rendition received a nomination for Performance of the Year at the CMT Awards in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before Loretta\u2019s death at the age of 90, Emmy was able to get some invaluable advice from her. \u201cWhile performing, I would sing one song everyone knew, which was \u2018If I Die Young,\u2019 and then I\u2019d sing an original song,\u201d Emmy explained in an interview. \u201cMemaw always told me to do that because everyone wants to sing along with you. But then if you want to share your heart, do that too, but not too much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Did American Idol\u2019s Emmy Russell Have an Eating Disorder?<\/span><\/h2>\n

For her American Idol<\/em> audition, Emmy sang an original song called \u201cSkinny,\u201d which she first released in August 2023. The track is about battling an eating disorder, and includes lyrics like, \u201cHaven\u2019t eaten in days, God I hate how you made me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In a May 2023 Instagram<\/a> post, Emmy detailed her recovery journey along with a photo of herself in the gym. \u201cSuper grateful to finally take on these lies I told myself my entire life!\u201d she wrote. \u201cI don\u2019t wanna be skinny, I wanna be strong.
