{"id":96801,"date":"2024-05-12T12:40:48","date_gmt":"2024-05-12T12:40:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/12\/roger-corman-prolific-cult-movie-king-dies-at-98\/"},"modified":"2024-05-12T12:40:48","modified_gmt":"2024-05-12T12:40:48","slug":"roger-corman-prolific-cult-movie-king-dies-at-98","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/12\/roger-corman-prolific-cult-movie-king-dies-at-98\/","title":{"rendered":"Roger Corman, Prolific Cult Movie King, Dies at 98"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Devotees of American independent film, cult movie aficionados and exploitation film buffs are mourning the death of Roger Corman\u2014mentor to the \u201cNew Hollywood\u201d generation of filmmakers, distributor of Bergman, Truffaut, and Fellini, and the producer and\/or director of upwards of 500 films, ranging from <em>Little Shop of Horrors<\/em> to his acclaimed cycle of eight movies based on stories by Edgar Allen Poe.<\/p>\n<p>Corman, dubbed the \u201cPope of Pop Cinema,\u201d died May 9 at his Santa Monica home, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/news\/roger-corman-dead-producer-independent-b-movie-1235999591\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Variety<\/em> confirms<\/a>. He was 98 years old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Corman\u2019s staggering output encompassed nearly every film genre: adventure (<em>She Gods of Shark Reef<\/em>) biker (<em>The Wild Angels<\/em>), dystopia (<em>Death Race 2000<\/em>), film noir (1955\u2019s <em>The Fast and the Furious<\/em>), gangster (<em>The St. Valentine\u2019s Day Massacre<\/em>), horror (<em>Pit and the Pendulum<\/em>), monster (<em>Attack of the Crab Monsters<\/em>), psychedelia (<em>The Trip<\/em>), racing (<em>The Young Racers<\/em>), rock and roll (<em>Carnival Rock<\/em>), sci-fi (<em>Not of This Earth<\/em>), social drama (<em>The Intruder<\/em>), space opera (<em>Battle Beyond the Stars<\/em>), teenage rebellion (<em>Rock and Roll High School<\/em>), war (<em>Von Richtofen and Brown<\/em>), westerns (<em>Five Guns West<\/em>), women-in-prison (<em>Caged Heat<\/em>), and W.T.F. (<em>Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The end credits of <strong>Alex Stapleton\u2019s<\/strong> 2011 documentary, <em>Corman\u2019s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel,<\/em> distill the not-so-discreet charms of the Corman canon with an exhilarating montage of clips featuring cheesy monsters, fiery car explosions, party-crashing piranhas, Vincent Price, the leading man of his Poe cycle, kickass Blaxploitation, and Mary Woronov with a gun and a point-blank glare. But Corman may be best remembered for the budding talents he nurtured and the careers he launched. It is testament to his influence that the 47th Academy Awards ceremony, presented in 1975, was more like a reunion of the so-called Roger Corman School, with six of the top eight Oscars awarded to former Corman \u201cgraduates:\u201d <strong>Francis Ford Coppola, Ellen Burstyn, Robert Towne,<\/strong> and <strong>Robert De Niro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In addition, <strong>Jack Nicholson,<\/strong> nominated that year for <em>Chinatown<\/em>, made his film debut in Corman\u2019s <em>Cry-Baby Killer<\/em>. <strong>Diane Ladd<\/strong> and <strong>Talia Shire,<\/strong> nominees for best supporting actress, also got their starts in Corman films (<em>The Wild Angels<\/em> and <em>Gas-s-s-s,<\/em> respectively). And Corman\u2019s New World Pictures distributed that year\u2019s best foreign film, Federico Fellini\u2019s <em>Amarcord<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The sometimes-schlocky titles of Corman\u2019s films belied a signature style, and a subversive wit and worldview. His most memorable work threw in with society\u2019s outcasts, underdogs and rebels.
