{"id":96366,"date":"2024-05-10T18:35:38","date_gmt":"2024-05-10T18:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/10\/anthropic-now-lets-kids-use-its-ai-tech-within-limits-techcrunch\/"},"modified":"2024-05-10T18:35:38","modified_gmt":"2024-05-10T18:35:38","slug":"anthropic-now-lets-kids-use-its-ai-tech-within-limits-techcrunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/10\/anthropic-now-lets-kids-use-its-ai-tech-within-limits-techcrunch\/","title":{"rendered":"Anthropic now lets kids use its AI tech &#8212; within limits | TechCrunch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI startup Anthropic is changing its policies to allow minors to use its generative AI systems \u2014 in certain circumstances, at least.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Announced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/updating-our-usage-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a> on the company\u2019s official blog Friday, Anthropic will begin letting teens and preteens use third-party apps (but not its own <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/05\/01\/anthropic-launches-a-new-premium-plan-aimed-at-businesses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apps<\/a>, necessarily) powered by its AI models so long as the developers of those apps implement specific safety features and disclose to users which Anthropic technologies they\u2019re leveraging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/support.anthropic.com\/en\/articles\/9307344-responsible-use-of-anthropic-s-models-guidelines-for-organizations-serving-minors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support article<\/a>, Anthropic lists several safety measures devs creating AI-powered apps for minors should include, like age verification systems, content moderation and filtering and educational resources on \u201csafe and responsible\u201d AI use for minors. The company also says that it may make available \u201ctechnical measures\u201d intended to tailor AI product experiences for minors, like a \u201cchild-safety system prompt\u201d that developers targeting minors would be required to implement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Devs using Anthropic\u2019s AI models will also have to comply with \u201capplicable\u201d child safety and data privacy regulations such as the Children\u2019s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the U.S. federal law that protects the online privacy of children under 13. Anthropic says it plans to \u201cperiodically\u201d audit apps for compliance, suspending or terminating the accounts of those who repeatedly violate the compliance requirement, and mandate that developers \u201cclearly state\u201d on public-facing sites or documentation that they\u2019re in compliance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are certain use cases where AI tools can offer significant benefits to younger users, such as test preparation or tutoring support,\u201d Anthropic writes in the post. \u201cWith this in mind, our updated policy allows organizations to incorporate our API into their products for minors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic\u2019s change in policy comes as kids and teens are increasingly turning to generative AI tools for help not only with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/13\/technology\/chatbot-cheating-schools-students.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/13\/technology\/chatbot-cheating-schools-students.html\">schoolwork<\/a> but personal issues, and as rival generative AI vendors \u2014 including Google and OpenAI \u2014 are exploring more use cases aimed at children. This year, OpenAI formed a <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/02\/07\/openai-forms-a-new-team-to-study-child-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new team<\/a> to study child safety and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/01\/29\/openai-partners-with-common-sense-media-to-collaborate-on-ai-guidelines\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/01\/29\/openai-partners-with-common-sense-media-to-collaborate-on-ai-guidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> a partnership with Common Sense Media to collaborate on kid-friendly AI guidelines. And Google made its chatbot Bard, since rebranded to Gemini, available to teens in English in selected regions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90966620\/chatgpt-is-landing-kids-in-the-principals-office-survey-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90966620\/chatgpt-is-landing-kids-in-the-principals-office-survey-finds\">poll<\/a> from the Center for Democracy and Technology, 29% of kids report having used generative AI like OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT to deal with anxiety or mental health issues, 22% for issues with friends and 16% for family conflicts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content wp-block-html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"In-Article Links\">\n<p>Last summer, schools and colleges\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/05\/as-nyc-public-schools-block-chatgpt-openai-says-its-working-on-mitigations-to-help-spot-chatgpt-generated-text\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/05\/as-nyc-public-schools-block-chatgpt-openai-says-its-working-on-mitigations-to-help-spot-chatgpt-generated-text\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rushed<\/a> to ban generative AI apps \u2014 in particular ChatGPT \u2014 over fears of plagiarism and misinformation. Since then, some have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/24\/business\/schools-chatgpt-chatbot-bans.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/24\/business\/schools-chatgpt-chatbot-bans.html\">reversed<\/a> their bans.
