Chris Pine<\/strong><\/a> explained why the negative reviews of his directorial debut were \u201ca real come-to-Jesus moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pine, 43, directed the movie<\/a> Poolman<\/em>, which failed to impress after it debuted at Toronto International Film Festival last year. Despite the unfavorable commentary, Pine felt proud of the accomplishment.<\/p>\n

\u201cCriticism as an actor is just a part of the game, but there\u2019s a lot of stuff to hide behind,\u201d Pine said on the \u201cHappy Sad Confused\u201d podcast<\/a> released on Thursday, May 9. \u201cThere\u2019s the director and the writer and the release pattern. \u2026 As an actor you come on set and you do your dance and you go off, and by the time the film comes out, you\u2019ve done X amount of other projects.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pine compared \u201ccowriting, directing and starring in\u201d the movie to being \u201ca stand-up comedian on stage feeling utterly naked.\u201d Overall, the experience allowed the actor to see \u201chow resilient\u201d he really is.<\/p>\n

Poolman<\/em> is a comedic mystery that tells the story of a Los Angeles pool cleaner who uncovers a water heist. Aside from Pine, who stars as protagonist Darren Barrenman, Annette Bening<\/strong> and Danny DeVito<\/strong> also appear in the film.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried to make a joyful film,\u201d Pine said during Thursday\u2019s podcast episode. \u201cWith so much joy behind it, to then be met with a fusillade of not-so-joyous stuff \u2026 the cognitive dissonance there was quite something. It\u2019s been ultimately the best thing that\u2019s ever happened to me. It\u2019s forced me to double down on joy and really double down on what I love most about my job, which you kind of forget.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pine said being an actor is \u201cfundamentally about play,\u201d something that\u2019s easy to take advantage of.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou become children for hours a day and make believe,\u201d he added. \u201cThere\u2019s an impish quality that I don\u2019t want to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n
