Now, Asus is beginning to reveal its successor: the ROG Ally X. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Don\u2019t call it an Ally 2: when it ships in the second half of the year, the Windows-based Ally X will have the same AMD Z1 Extreme chipset and the same 48\u2013120Hz VRR screen. It\u2019s not quite like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23951655\/steam-deck-oled-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Steam Deck OLED<\/a>, where Valve got AMD to revise its chip for better battery life and stability and added a larger, brighter, gorgeous new OLED panel with improved response time and slimmer bezels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component clear-both block md:float-left md:mr-30 md:w-[320px] lg:-ml-100\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote mb-20\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup relative bg-repeating-lines-dark bg-[length:1px_1.2em] pb-8 font-polysans text-28 font-medium leading-120 tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20  dark:bg-repeating-lines-light dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple\">\u201cWe\u2019re not looking at 30 to 40 percent more capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But the newly black-colored handheld <em>will<\/em> have a substantial battery life improvement, Asus SVP Shawn Yen tells <em>The Verge \u2014 <\/em>because Asus will cram a substantially larger battery pack into the Ally X\u2019s revised shell. \u201cWe\u2019re not looking at 30 to 40 percent more capacity,\u201d he tells me. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at way more than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Asus won\u2019t talk specific specs today. Instead, Yen asks me how much battery life I\u2019d realistically like from a revised handheld. I say I\u2019d want to double the worst-case battery life to three hours since I\u2019m currently seeing maybe 1.5 hours in games. \u201cIt won\u2019t disappoint your worst-case scenario,\u201d he tells me. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Yen says battery life has been the single biggest request since launch; Asus has seen how the community even sometimes straps giant external batteries to their handhelds, even though the Ally theoretically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/e\/23494406\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had room inside<\/a> for a larger battery pack. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cWhen we launched [the original Ally], we didn\u2019t have such a clear understanding that the battery might be something people desire more than a lighter-weight device,\u201d he admits. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Battery isn\u2019t the only change Asus is talking about today; the Ally X is about addressing many of the community\u2019s top priorities for how to revise the original. \u201cWe think about battery and storage, graphics and memory, ports&#8230; our goal is to fit as many of those as possible into a device like this,\u201d says Asus senior product manager Gabriel Meng. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Again, no specs today, but Asus says the Ally X should now have more than its current 16GB of RAM so that you can allocate lots of it to the GPU without impacting the rest of the system. It should have a longer M.2 2280 SSD slot, so buyers can more easily find and purchase larger SSD upgrades than the current M.2 2230 allows.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The Ally X should also be even more repairable, with redesigned joystick modules that are more interchangeable \u2014 and perhaps upgradable, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/1\/22\/23566353\/switch-joy-con-drift-solution-nintendo-gulikit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">if Gulikit steps up<\/a>? While I didn\u2019t get to see it for myself, Asus says the handheld will be slightly heavier due to the larger battery, with revised grips, and slight tuning to things like the D-Pad, joysticks, and triggers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><small><em>Above: a video showing the inside of the original ROG Ally.<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">And, while Asus still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/5\/1\/24146755\/asus-rog-ally-sd-card-reader\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won\u2019t admit that the Ally\u2019s SD card reader ever had any fault<\/a>, tells me it\u2019s the same exact SD card reader it uses in its laptops, and says it doesn\u2019t believe any issues actually had to do with overheating, the Ally X will have a rearranged motherboard layout that sounds like it\u2019ll move it away from the system\u2019s vents. \u201cWe don\u2019t want people to think that\u2019s what we <em>had <\/em>to do,\u201d Meng says. \u201cWe had to move things around the board to make them fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Asus says the Ally X\u2019s improvements will come at a cost; unlike the Steam Deck OLED, which largely replaced Valve\u2019s LCD model at the same price points, the Ally X will start at a higher price than the original. The original 2023 ROG Ally will also continue to stick around and may see discounts. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">As far as a ROG Ally 2 goes, Asus agrees that it has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23499215\/valve-steam-deck-interview-late-2022#:~:text=%E2%80%9CI%20think%20we%E2%80%99ll%20opt%20to%20keep%20the%20one%20performance%20level%20for%20a%20little%20bit%20longer%2C%20and%20only%20look%20at%20changing%20the%20performance%20level%20when%20there%20is%20a%20significant%20gain%20to%20be%20had%2C%E2%80%9D%20he%20adds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similar philosophy to Valve<\/a>: it wants to build a true successor when it can offer a significant performance boost, not just an incremental one. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">And while Asus doesn\u2019t plan to sell an aftermarket battery upgrade for original Ally buyers it has a big software update coming for those buyers as well: Armory Crate SE 1.5 is not only a very fresh coat of paint and navigation improvements, it\u2019ll finally let players share their button mappings for various games with other Ally owners.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Asus tells me it still believes in Windows. While Meng says, \u201cWe are very open-minded to looking at other solutions,\u201d and that the company does have conversations with Valve, Asus says it has philosophical and logistical reasons to stick with Microsoft\u2019s OS, including a desire to have the \u201cinclusiveness of all different game platforms\u201d instead of relying on Steam.
