The audience\u2019s overwhelmingly positive reaction to her new film left Anne Hathaway<\/strong><\/a> teary. \u201cYou have no idea the gift that you\u2019ve just given us,\u201d she gushed at the premiere of The Idea of You<\/em> in Austin on March 16. \u201cI will never forget this screening.\u201d<\/p>\n More praise for the flick \u2014 which debuted on Prime Video on May 2 \u2014 followed as Anne hit the promotion trail. But while things seem to be coming up roses for her of late, there\u2019s plenty the actress wouldn\u2019t mind forgetting \u2014 from being put in uncomfortable positions at work to seeing the man she\u2019d discussed marrying imprisoned for fraud.<\/p>\n \u201cAnne has been through so much, both publicly and privately,\u201d an insider exclusively tells Life & Style<\/em>. \u201cShe\u2019s been famous since her teens and experienced scrutiny over her appearance, her personality, her fashion choices \u2014 she had to build up a very thick skin<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Anne, 41, became a household name in 2000s rom coms. Life behind the scenes wasn\u2019t always so dreamy, though. The Princess Diaries<\/em> star recently revealed that she had to kiss 10 guys to determine who she had \u201cchemistry\u201d with for one film. \u201cI was told\u2026 \u2018Aren\u2019t you excited to make out with all of them?\u2019 \u2026 I thought it sounded gross,\u201d she recalled, noting she went along with the request during her \u201cchronically stressed\u201d youth. \u201cI was so young and terribly aware how easy it was to lose everything by being labeled \u2018difficult.\u2019\u201d It wasn\u2019t the only time a situation appeared out of her control. Anne split from beau of four years Raffaello Follieri<\/strong> in 2008 after he was charged with running a high-stakes scam. He ultimately served four years in prison. \u201cI spent a week in shock,\u201d his famous ex has said, adding that the scandal left her more guarded. \u201cThe rug was pulled out from under me.\u201d<\/p>\n Sadly, she\u2019d be taken by surprise again when the internet exploded with hatred toward her. While a much-panned 2011 gig co-hosting the Oscars first sparked ire, matters hit a fever pitch once Anne won her own Academy Award in 2013 for Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/em>. She\u2019s said that her \u201ctoxic\u201d identity online cost her roles and made her feel like she\u2019d been \u201cpunched in the gut \u2026 My impression is that people needed a break from me.\u201d<\/p>\n In the end, however, Anne says it was a \u201cgood thing\u201d that helped her realize what was important.
