\nHis actress wife Deborah Roberts, 63, also posted a tribute to the animal online, saying alongside more pictures of her and Al with Pepper: \u201cGratitude. My heart is bursting with it today. Our littlest girl, Pepper, gave us quite a scare. She has survived an emergency surgery. But thankfully, our strong girl is recovering.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWe are grateful for any and all prayers for our sweet doggie, who has stolen our hearts for 12 years now.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nDeborah added the hashtags \u201cgrateful\u201d, \u201cheart\u201d, \u201cdoggie\u201d and \u201clove\u201d to her post.<\/p>\n
\nAl marked his 69th birthday by saying he feels \u201clucky to be alive\u201d after a string of his own health problems.<\/p>\n
\nHe told fans on his Instagram: \u201cThis is my 69th anniversary of orbiting the sun and after everything that I went through at the end of last year I am more than grateful to be celebrating this birthday.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd to all of you who sent good wishes and well wishes over the past year, god bless you. Thank you so much. I appreciate it\u2026 grateful for another trip around the sun.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nDad-of-three Al has previously been absent from \u2018Today\u2019 after being hospitalised for weeks for blood clots in his legs and lungs, as well as two bleeding ulcers.<\/p>\n
\nHe was also forced to have his colon \u201cre-sectioned\u201d, his gallbladder removed and his small intestine fixed.<\/p>\n
\nAl revealed on \u2018Today\u2019 about his ordeal: \u201cI lost half my blood. They were trying to figure out where it was.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe has also had knee surgery, which Deborah told fans online left him with \u201cbody fatigue\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nIn November 2020, Al was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had to undergo surgery, but was back on \u2018Today\u2019 two weeks after the operation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
