In 2018, Lipa sang the song at the BRITs awards show in a performance many deemed to be lacklustre. A video posted of the performance went on to spawn a comment, which is now a viral meme: \u201cI love her lack of energy, go girl give us nothing!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
This was worsened by a\u00a0clip of her infamous dance move\u00a0in her\u00a0Calvin Harris\u00a0collaboration \u2018One Kiss\u2019, which was called the \u201cpencil sharpener\u201d dance.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen people took that snippet of me dancing online and just turned it into a meme, and then when I won the best new artist Grammy and people were like, \u2018She\u2019s not deserving of it, she\u2019s got no stage presence, she\u2019s not going to stick around.\u2019 Those things were hurtful. It was humiliating.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
She had to take herself off Twitter as she was upset : \u201cpeople were picking everything apart that I\u2019d been working on, and I had to learn all that in front of everyone. In the public eye, I was figuring out who I was as an artist, as a performer, All that was happening while I was 22, 23 years old and still growing up. You have to build tough skin. You have to be resilient.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
The humiliation over the meme lasted two years total \u201cuntil I finished writing \u2018Future Nostalgia\u2019 and did my first performance of \u2018Don\u2019t Start Now\u2019, at the MTV Europe Music awards. It never was like I couldn\u2019t get out of bed because of what I thought people thought of me. I didn\u2019t care to that degree. But that\u2019s when it was most heightened for me.\u201d<\/i> <\/p>\nShe got a positive audience reaction once \u2018Don\u2019t Start Now\u2019 came out: \u201cIt was November 2019 when \u2018Don\u2019t Start Now\u2019 came out, and it dawned on me that I\u2019m finally going to get up and dance in front of people after what they have thought about me for so long. And I went back, did that performance, and everyone was like, \u2018Oh, we were wrong.\u2019 I got a real kick out of that.\u201d<\/i>
