The Welcome to Wrexham<\/em><\/a> season 3 premiere kicked off with a recap of the second season finale \u2014 Wrexham AFC was officially promoted to the English Football League<\/a> for the first time in 15 years.<\/p>\n

As the team\u2019s cochairmen Ryan Reynolds<\/strong><\/a> and Rob McElhenney<\/strong> geared up for the team\u2019s first season in League Two, a harrowing injury to star player Paul Mullen<\/strong> had the players losing momentum during pre-season<\/a> \u2014 and forced him to stay in the United States for two weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cRob was so kind, he offered Paul his own home to stay in,\u201d Reynolds, 47, joked during the episode, which aired on Thursday, May 2. \u201cI felt a little like, I\u2019m going to have to compete with that somehow. So, I offered Paul my lungs. I just said, \u2018You can have the lungs and you\u2019ll be playing before you know it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

McElhenney, 47, joked that Reynolds probably has \u201crobust lungs\u201d to share. \u201cNot the lungs of a 26-year-old though,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Mullen\u2019s injury occurred during Wrexham\u2019s preseason game against Manchester United, which took place in San Diego. The tense scene on the field showed Mullen, 29, laying horizontal after colliding with a player from the other team. \u201cI can\u2019t breathe,\u201d he could be heard wheezing as his lips turned visibly blue.<\/p>\n

\u201cHit the floor and thought I was just winded. It will go, it will pass,\u201d Mullen said during his confessional. \u201cObviously, as the seconds went, and I tried to take a breath in, and I couldn\u2019t. That\u2019s when I thought, \u2018Jesus, I could be in trouble here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

It was later revealed that he suffered four fractured ribs and a punctured lung.<\/p>\n

Because of the injury, Mullen was unable to fly back to the U.K. for two weeks. He missed Wrexham\u2019s season opener and a reunion with his family. (Mullen shares son Albi<\/a>, 4, with wife Mollie O\u2019Brien<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n

\u201cThey basically said that if I got on a plane, my lung would expand, and because there\u2019s a hole already in it, basically it would pop,\u201d Mullen said. \u201cThen, you\u2019re in trouble when you\u2019re flying over the Atlantic Ocean. You ain\u2019t got many hospitals to go to in that circumstance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead of playing, Mullen was forced to watch Wrexham\u2019s first League Two game against MK Dons, which they lost 3-5. (It\u2019s important to note that Hugh Jackman<\/strong> did accompany Reynolds and McElhenney to the game.)<\/p>\n
