Will Smith<\/a>, 55, and Jada Pinkett Smith, 52, admitted she was \u201cwrongly internalising the negativity from the outside\u201d due to her privileged background, but was determined to carve her own path.<\/p>\nSpeaking with Allure magazine, she said: \u201cI definitely think that a little bit of insecurity has driven me harder because people do think that the only reason I\u2019m successful is because of my parents.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat has driven me to work really hard to try to prove them wrong. But nowadays, I don\u2019t need to prove [anything] to anybody.<\/p>\n
\u201cI truly believe that my spirit is a strong spirit and that, even if my parents weren\u2019t who they were, I would still be a weirdo and a crazy thinker.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nWhen she was just seven years old, Willow made her Hollywood debut alongside her father in 2007\u2019s \u2018I Am Legend\u2019, and released her chart-topper \u2018Whip My Hair\u2019 three years later.<\/p>\n
\nThe actress admitted she was \u201ctotally scarred\u201d after her track went platinum when she was just 10 years old.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cI was totally scarred. But so many Black girls and women were inspired by that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nWillow also argued her race acted as an obstacle for a successful career in the entertainment business, but emphasised she wouldn\u2019t change her skin colour if she could.<\/p>\n
\nShe explained: \u201cBeing black in America, even with privilege, which I’m never going to deny that I have, you’re still black.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd I love being black. People would look at me and [say], \u2018Okay, well, her parents are this and that, but she still is like me. She still has brown skin.\u2019 And we all know that that doesn’t exempt you from anything, and that’s a place of connection.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe singer then addressed rumours claiming she is \u201cdifficult\u201d to work with, and insisted people simply misinterpret her drive to \u201cget to that goal\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cI\u2019ve always been afraid of being perceived as difficult. In this society, a woman who knows what she wants is always perceived as being \u2018difficult\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI\u2019m not being difficult, I just know what I want. And I\u2019m willing to sacrifice the chillness of the moment for trying to get to that goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
