Glenn Close<\/strong><\/a> looked elegant and sophisticated at Variety<\/em>\u2019s 2024 Power of Women luncheon.<\/p>\n

Close, 77, donned a zip-up black blazer with matching pants for the Thursday, May 2, event in New York City. She completed the look with a pair of nude, open-toed heels.<\/p>\n

The Oscar nominee was all smiles posing with Mariska Hargitay<\/strong> on the red carpet, who also wore an all-black ensemble for the occasion. Close gave a speech introducing Hargitay, 60, who was honored at the event for her work as an advocate for sexual assault survivors.<\/p>\n

During her remarks, Close admitted she felt \u201coverwhelmed\u201d by the task of introducing her \u201cextraordinary friend\u201d in just two minutes.<\/p>\n

Hargitay then took the stage herself and spoke about Harvey Weinstein\u2019<\/strong>s 2020 rape conviction being overturned<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhile Hollywood may appear to be all glitz and glam on the surface, the industry has seen its fair share of\u00a0scandals\u00a0through the years. The\u00a0New York Times\u00a0and the\u00a0New Yorker first published investigative pieces in 2017 that accused disgruntled movie producer Harvey Weinstein of decades of sexual assault and harassment. Soon after, Weinstein stood trial and was [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI want to talk today about reversing convictions,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s impossible to reverse my conviction that survivors matter, that what happened to us matters, and that our society must respond to survivors more compassionately, more holistically, with a deeper, more nuanced understanding of what healing means.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hargitay also addressed the fact that the verdict was overturned due to the admittance of testimony from alleged victims who weren\u2019t involved with the case being tried.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do want to say something about the overturned Harvey Weinstein conviction, specifically about the reason it was overturned: Too many women\u2019s voices. Too many women were allowed to speak,\u201d Hargitay said. \u201cRisky to let women speak? You\u2019re damn right it is. Too many women speaking brings change.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGirl power! As Hollywood continues to make major changes, many stars have come forward to stress the importance of feminism and gender equality. Ryan Gosling, who shares two daughters with Eva Mendes, told the Evening Standard in June 2016 that \u201cwomen are better than men.\u201d The Notebook actor noted, \u201cThey are stronger, more evolved. You [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Weinstein appeared in court<\/a> on Wednesday, May 1, for the first time since his conviction was overturned. His case will be retried.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe in this case,\u201d prosecutor Nicole Blumberg<\/strong> said of taking Weinstein\u2019s case to court again. \u201cIt was a strong case in 2020 \u2026 and remains a strong case in 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Hargitay, Amy Schumer<\/strong>, Shonda Rimes<\/strong> and Anitta<\/strong> were honored by Variety<\/em> on Thursday. Schumer, 42, spoke about her work with Everytown for Gun Safety, Rimes, 54, highlighted the work of nonprofit dance school the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, and Anitta, 31, reflected on dreaming big while growing up poor in Brazil.<\/p>\n
