The\u00a0Duggars<\/span><\/a>\u00a0first made their television debut in the 2004 special\u00a014 Kids and Pregnant Again<\/i><\/span><\/a>,<\/i>\u00a0and their\u00a0style<\/span><\/a>\u00a0caught the attention of viewers.<\/p>\n From\u00a0long skirts<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0even longer hair<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to plaid dresses and clunky collars, fans were just as fascinated by their looks as they were their big brood.<\/p>\n Back in 2013, Duggar family matriarch\u00a0Michelle Duggar<\/b><\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 who shares\u00a019 kids<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with husband\u00a0Jim Bob Duggar<\/b><\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 explained the reasoning behind the famous family\u2019s\u00a0modest dress code<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cAfter I was born again and became a Christian, I really began to cover up,\u201d the former cheerleader said during a\u00a0TLC Q&A<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at the time. \u201cI felt like the Lord was saying to me, \u2018You know what, you probably shouldn\u2019t be wearing that. It\u2019s a little bit low cut, or a little bit too high, you know?\u2019 I just really felt like I needed to obey what God was saying to me first and understand later. And then I saw in the scriptures a lot of things that helped me understand why I was feeling uncomfortable with my previous clothing choices.\u201d<\/p>\n Soon after, the\u00a0reality TV<\/span><\/a>\u00a0mama said she cleaned out her closet and started fresh, picking up skirts and dresses from local\u00a0thrift shops<\/span><\/a>. And her daughters did the same.<\/p>\n In the book\u00a0Growing Up Duggar<\/i>,\u00a0Jessa<\/b><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0Jill<\/b><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0Jinger<\/b><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Jana<\/b><\/span><\/a>\u00a0described their clothing, noting that they \u201cdo not dress modestly\u201d because they are \u201cashamed\u201d but rather the \u201ccontrary.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe realize that our body is a special gift from God and that He intends for it to be shared only with our future husband \u2026 \u201d they wrote. \u201cWe avoid low-cut, cleavage-showing, gaping or\u00a0bare-shouldered tops<\/span><\/a>; and when needed, we wear an undershirt. We try to make it a habit to always cover the top of our shirt with our hands when we bend over. We don\u2019t want to play the peekaboo game with our neckline.\u201d<\/p>\n Over the years, however, several members of the family seemed to have forgotten the \u201crules<\/span><\/a>.\u201d *Cough, cough\u00a0Jinger<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Jill<\/span><\/a>.* These days, Jinger can be seen wearing skirts and dresses \u2014 some are even <\/span>cut above the knee<\/span><\/a>! She \u200b\u200balso enjoys wearing <\/span>sporting pants and shorts<\/span><\/a>, later reflecting on her decision to stray away from her family\u2019s traditions in her 2021 book, <\/span>The Hope We Hold: Finding Peace With the Promises of God<\/span><\/i>, which she cowrote with husband <\/span>Jeremy Vuolo<\/b><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cMy mom had always dressed us girls in skirts and dresses, a standard that was taken from Deuteronomy 22:5, which says, \u2018A woman shall not wear a man\u2019s garment,\u2019\u201d Jinger explained in her book. \u201cModesty was a huge topic in our house, and we believed that wearing skirts instead of pants was a central part of being modest. But I wanted to discover for myself what the Bible had to say.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The social media influencer also shared that she \u201cnever found a passage specifically forbidding women from wearing pants,\u201d adding, \u201cGrowing up, I had a set of standards that I took as givens \u2026 [But] my convictions were changing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI thought I had to wear only skirts and dresses to please God,\u201d Jinger told People<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in January 2023. \u201cAnd if I step outside of what I think is expected of me, I would think God\u2019s going to be so displeased with me and it could bring harm on myself.\u201d<\/p>\n Sister Joy-Anna Duggar<\/strong><\/a> explained how she and husband Austin Forsyth<\/strong><\/a> came to the conclusion that it was OK for her to wear pants in a March 2023 YouTube video. The pair began discussing the topic \u201cwithin the first year of marriage\u201d and it was something the pair talked about \u201con and off for the last three or four years.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI had always worn skirts my whole life and so for me, like I don\u2019t know, I just wasn\u2019t in a rush,\u201d the former TLC personality explained. \u201cI feel like you can be modest and wear pants and that\u2019s kind of where we came to. I do try to be modest in my pants, like in wearing pants, and not things too tight or too short.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
