Emma Stone<\/strong> has two Oscars<\/a>, two Golden Globe<\/a>s, and countless iconic roles<\/a>. She just wants one more thing: for people to call her by her actual, birth name.<\/p>\n Born Emily Jean Stone in 1988, the actor said in 2017<\/a> that she was compelled to choose a different moniker as a teen. \u201cMy real name is Emily Stone, but when I started acting, that name was already taken by another actress, so I had to come up with a different one.\u201d (Actors’ union SAG-AFTRA requires each member to have a unique working name.)<\/p>\n \u201cFor a 16-year-old, picking a new name is an interesting prospect.\u201d<\/p>\n But \u201cEmma\u201d wasn’t her first choice. A look at Stone’s IMDB page<\/a> shows that her early aughts credits, for appearances on shows such as Medium<\/em>, were under the name \u201cRiley Stone.\u201d That lasted about six months, she said in an interview with W<\/a>. \u201cI did a guest spot on Malcolm in the Middle<\/em>, and one day they were like, \u2018Riley! Riley!\u2019 and I had no idea who they were talking to.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSo then I changed it to \u2018Emma\u2019, because it’s closer to Emily.\u201d<\/p>\n That said, she had the option of Emily J. Stone at the time, but didn’t take it, saying \u201cI don’t think I can pull off the \u2018J\u2019.” Another possible factor in the decision was a fondness for the Spice Girls, particularly Emma \u201cBaby Spice\u201d Bunton<\/strong>. In an interview<\/a> with Jimmy Fallon<\/strong> from 2018, Stone said that \u201cGrowing up, I was super blonde \u2026 I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice.<\/p>\n “And guess what? Now I am,\u201d Stone said. It’s unclear if in the years since that interview, she’s grown less into the Spice Girls or more into her \u201cJ\u201d era, but her desire to reclaim \u201cEmily\u201d seems to be ever-growing. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a> in a conversation published this week, she was again outed as an Emily by her co-interviewee and The Curse<\/em> co-star<\/a> Nathan Fiedler.<\/strong><\/p>\n “I’d like to say something,” Fielder said as the interview kicked into gear. \u201cHer name’s Emily, but she goes by Emma professionally. So when there’s people that don’t know her, I end up saying Emma. But I’m going to just say Emily from here on.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI freaked out a couple of years ago,” Stone said in response. “For some reason, I was like, \u2018I can\u2019t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n That freakout has abated a bit, Stone said, to the point where she’s taken a \u201cYou can say Emma. You can say anything,\u201d attitude. But still, she has a yearning for the name of her birth.
