The troubled \u2018Punch Drunk Love\u2019 actor was found dead on 2 February, 2014, aged 46 in his Manhattan apartment with a syringe in his arm after he accidentally overdosed on drugs including heroin and cocaine \u2013 and his paediatric nurse sibling Emily Barr has now written an essay about him for The Paris Review to mark what would have been his 56th birthday.<\/p>\n
She said in the piece: \u201cHe was a cuddly person, much more so than me.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe loved to sit close on a couch, walk arm in arm down the street and hug big.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily added the \u201cloud parts\u201d he had on screen reflected his jolly personality.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cThe way he would jump up and dance around when teasing you \u2013 even after you\u2019d pleaded for him to stop, he just couldn\u2019t help poking fun one last time.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nEmily also said Philip secretly based his physical and emotional comedy on the acting of one of his big-screen heroes, Gene Wilder.<\/p>\n
\nShe added one of her brother\u2019s \u201cabsolute favourite\u201d films was 1975\u2019s \u2018The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes\u2019 Smarter Brother\u2019, in which the late Gene plays Sigerson Holmes.<\/p>\n
\nEmily said: \u201cI could swear that Phil based much of his acting technique on watching Gene Wilder scenes like this over and over as a kid.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThe physical comedy is subtle in that the main character is unaware of his buffoonery \u2013 only the audience is in on the joke.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cPhil did this a lot: we would know that something was up, but the character himself was often clueless.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nEmily said Philip\u2019s scene-stealing roles in Ben Stiller comedy \u2018Along Came Polly\u2019, as well as porn drama \u2018Boogie Nights\u2019 and \u2018Charlie Wilson\u2019s War\u2019 were great examples of his \u201cloud, obnoxious physicality\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nBut she stresses he was also capable of being hugely subtle on screen, saying his roles in \u2018The Savages\u2019, \u2018The Talented Mr Ripley\u2019 and \u2018Capote\u2019 showed he was adept at being \u201cmore nuanced\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nEmily went on: \u201cEven now, when I watch Phil playing these parts in films that now capture a distant past, in roles that have become familiar to us, I can see so much of who he was.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nReferring to the children\u2019s mystery series Philip \u201cloved\u201d growing up, she recalled: \u201cHe\u2019d wrap his big arm around me, and we would walk a little quicker as the temperature dropped and the sun set lower in the sky.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWe would talk, like when we were kids, imagining the story of Encyclopedia Brown trying to solve \u2018The Case of the Vanishing Actor\u2019, which takes place in a library with a small wooden door.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nDad-of-three Philip first got hooked on drugs at university, saying in a 2006 chat with \u201860 Minutes\u2019: \u201cI likes it all.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe went into rehab aged 22 in 1989, and statues sober for 23 years before relapsing in 2012, prompting another stay at a rehabilitation facility for drug use that lasted only 10 days in May 2013.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
