The 58-year-old actor, who wrote, produced, directed and starred in the 2016 follow-up to his 2001 male modelling farce, said he thought he had messed up his career and lost the ability to do comedy when it was a commercial and critical flop.<\/p>\n
He told \u2018The X Files\u2019 actor David Duchovny, 63, on his upcoming podcast \u2018Fail Better\u2019 about the devastating impact the failure of \u2018Zoolander 2\u2019 had on his life and mental state: \u201cI thought everybody wanted this.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd then it’s like, ‘Wow, I must have really (messed) this up.<\/p>\n
\u201cEverybody didn’t go to it. And it’s gotten these horrible reviews.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt really freaked me out because I was like, ‘I didn’t know was that bad?’<\/p>\n
\n“What scared me the most on that one was I\u2019m losing what I think what’s funny, the questioning yourself\u2026 on \u2018Zoolander 2\u2019, it was definitely blindsiding to me.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd it definitely affected me for a long time.”<\/p>\n
\n\u2018Zoolander 2\u2019, which saw Owen Wilson, 55, and Will Ferrell, 56, return from the first film, made only $29 million against its $50 million budget.<\/p>\n
\nThe sequel also featured cameos from celebrities including Justin Bieber, 30, and 39-year-old Katy Perry.<\/p>\n
\nBen said the failure gave him the \u201cspace\u201d to \u201ckind of sit with myself and have to deal with it and other projects that I had been working on\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nWhen he said he didn\u2019t want to pursue anything new amid the failure, David \u2013 whose podcast will be available from 7 May \u2013 asked him if it was \u201canger\u201d holding him back.<\/p>\n
\nBen replied: \u201cIt was just hurt. Finding yourself in terms of what creatively you want to be and do, I I always loved directing. I always loved making movies.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI always, in my mind, loved the idea of just directing movies that since I was a kid, and not necessarily comedies.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBen went on to direct the crime drama \u2018Escape at Dannemora\u2019 in 2018, for which he won a DGA Award for Outstanding Directing \u2013 Miniseries or TV Film.<\/p>\n
\nIn 2022, he also produced and directed the Emmy-nominated series \u2018Severance\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
