DolphiniOS, a fork of the popular Dolphin emulator for Nintendo Wii and GameCube games, has confirmed that it\u2019s not coming to the Apple App Store even though emulators are now supported. In a post on Friday<\/a>, the developer behind the emulator says it\u2019s because Apple doesn\u2019t allow DolphiniOS to use its underlying performance-boosting tech.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n As explained by developer OatmealDome, DolphiniOS \u2014 along with other Wii and GameCube emulators \u2014 uses something called Just-in-Time (JIT). This is a compiler that \u201ctranslates\u201d the GameCube and Wii\u2019s PowerPC-based code into a language other devices can understand, making emulations run a lot smoother.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n But Apple doesn\u2019t allow third-party apps to use JIT compilers, as noted by OatmealDome. \u201cThe only exceptions are Safari and alternative web browsers in Europe,\u201d the developer writes. \u201cWe submitted a DMA [Digital Markets Act] interoperability request to Apple for JIT support, but Apple denied the request a few weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Although there\u2019s a way to get around JIT by using an \u201cinterpreter,\u201d OatmealDome writes that it\u2019s \u201cmany times slower than the JIT compiler.\u201d A pair of videos shared by OatmealDome shows just how poorly a Mario Kart Wii<\/em> emulation performs on an iPhone 15 when using an interpreter<\/a> instead of JIT<\/a>. The Verge<\/em> reached out to Apple with a request for more information about its rules surrounding JIT but didn\u2019t immediately hear back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
