\u201cRight,\u201d Durst agreed.<\/p>\n
By this point, Lewin had listened to Jarecki\u2019s 20 hours\u2019 worth of Jinx<\/em> interviews. He reminded Durst that the millionaire had said in the past that something did<\/em> bother him about All Good Things.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cOh, killing all the dogs,\u201d Durst remembered. (Gosling\u2019s character kills the family dog in the film.) Lewin theorized that Durst would never hurt a dog. Durst agreed, though he couldn\u2019t answer as definitively on the subject of hurting women. (When Lewin suggested Durst dismembered the body of his first wife, Kathie, Durst replied, \u201cI\u2019m not gonna go there.\u201d)<\/p>\n Though Durst was worth an estimated $100 million<\/a>, he admitted to applying for food stamps because he got a kick out of cheating the government. He said he had shoplifted \u201csince I was a little kid\u201d because he had no interest in waiting in line. \u201cI\u2019ve got other things I want to do,\u201d he said. Other kids are taught to respect authority; as Durst told Lewin, \u201cI didn\u2019t have to follow the rules.\u201d At another point, Durst said he declined a television network\u2019s offer to make a special on him that would cast him as a good person. That would be going too far, in Durst\u2019s book: \u201cI never felt that I was really a good guy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n He volunteered that a previous lawyer didn\u2019t want him to tell the Galveston, Texas, jury about his daily routine: \u201cI\u2019m a millionaire. I don\u2019t have to work. I get up most mornings and smoke pot.\u201d (At another point, he told Lewin, \u201cI\u2019ve been smoking pot every day, all my life, for as long as I can remember.\u201d)<\/p>\n Durst spoke obliquely about his relationship with former inmates, presumably those he met while awaiting his 2003 Morris Black murder trial. After his arrest, Durst jumped bail and was caught in Pennsylvania trying to shoplift a chicken sandwich. The capture blew his inmates\u2019 minds.<\/p>\n \u201cNone of the inmates could understand that, at all: \u2018You have lots of money. Why\u2019d you get caught?\u2019\u201d Technically, he was caught because he was attempting to steal lunch, a newspaper, and a Band-Aid (with $500 cash<\/a> in his pocket and $37,000<\/a> in the car). Again, why risk your freedom for something so relatively small?<\/p>\n \u201cI can\u2019t explain it to you,\u201d said Durst. \u201cI couldn\u2019t explain it to the inmates. I mean, it was just ridiculous\u2026. I hated being a fugitive\u2026. I was the worst fugitive the world has ever met\u2026. Maybe I wanted to get caught. I certainly can\u2019t explain it any other way.\u201d<\/p>\n Bizarrely, he told Lewin about learning how to more effectively dismember a human body after he chopped up Morris Black. \u201cThe way I was doing it was the hard way,\u201d Durst said. \u201cSubsequently, I\u2019ve been told that a surgeon would cut up a body the same way you do a chicken. You go into the joint. And you cut around the joint. You get rid of all the ligaments. And then, the thing comes out. You\u2019re not gonna go and try to cut through the God-damned bone, like I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
