Leaving aside the complicated legal questions about emulators and ROMs, this app is mature and polished and supports a huge number of old consoles. The iPhone screen also turns out to be the absolute perfect size for playing some of those old pixelated <em>Mario<\/em> games. Just saying. (This was, not surprisingly, the most recommended thing this week and maybe in the history of <em>Installer <\/em>\u2014 thanks to everyone who sent it in!)<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.air.chat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Airchat<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>I honestly don\u2019t know how to feel about this app. Are voice-based social networks going to be a thing, or was Clubhouse just a strange pandemic-induced haze we were all in for a week? Lots of tech folks I know are into this one, though, so it\u2019s at least worth keeping an eye on.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.limitless.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Limitless<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> A very different kind of AI gadget, this one. The \u201cwe\u2019ll summarize your meetings\u201d approach is\u2026 fine, but I think the vision here, to figure out how to record and give you access to your life, is pretty cool. I also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/4\/15\/24130832\/limitless-ai-pendant-wearable-meetings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">really dig the Limitless Pendant<\/a>, which looks much less gadget-y than your average AI device.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insta360.com\/product\/insta360-x4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Insta360 X4<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> Insta360 is doing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24131495\/insta360-x4-360-camera-8k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some pretty nifty stuff<\/a> in the action camera world. The $500 X4 does 8K footage at 30 frames per second, which goes a long way when you\u2019re cropping and sharing videos later. It also has some ruggedness upgrades, which should help the more, uh, clumsy of us out there.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/soulver.app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Soulver 3 for iPhone<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>Soulver is the coolest, smartest calculator you\u2019ve ever seen, and at long (like, weirdly long) last, the latest version is on the iPhone. $14 is a lot for an app like this, but this one\u2019s worth it just for converting recipes and splitting bills.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fus.nothing.tech%2Fproducts%2Fear-a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Nothing Ear (a)<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> Nothing\u2019s earbuds have gotten pretty good, and I am <em>extremely <\/em>into the yellow accents and case on its new low-end models. (Which cost $99 and appear to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/4\/18\/24133464\/nothing-ear-a-specs-price-hands-on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just about as good<\/a> as the more expensive ones.) They don\u2019t have a ton of extra platform-specific features, but as Bluetooth earbuds go, they\u2019re a really good bet.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/entertainment\/amazon-music-maestro-ai-playlist-generator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Maestro for Amazon Music<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>I love this as a use for AI: just telling your music services the kind of stuff you want to listen to. Get weird with your mood, or just type, like, \u201cI like The 1975 and Van Morrison, play other bands\u201d and see what happens.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Meta AI<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>Say this for Mark Zuckerberg and Co.: they are not going small with their AI plans. The new bot works across platforms (and on your smart glasses) and runs on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/4\/18\/24133808\/meta-ai-assistant-llama-3-chatgpt-openai-rival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the new Llama 3 model<\/a> that Meta says rivals everything else on the market.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/podcastap.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>PodcastAP<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> A podcast app for the fediverse that can add new episodes to your timeline anywhere you are. It\u2019s pretty basic right now, and Mastodon et al. need to work on being better podcast players, but this is a super cool idea.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoviedb.org\/tv\/97083-the-circle-us?language=en-US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Circle <\/em>season 6<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>This is one of Netflix\u2019s more unhinged reality shows, which is saying something! A lot of you said you actively avoid it, wish your favorite apps would stop integrating it, and don\u2019t really see much use for it at all. I get that; that\u2019s how I feel about a lot of AI. There are so many neat-sounding things out there that turn out to kind of suck and mostly be a hassle that, at some point, you just kind of give up.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But! I did get a bunch of cool recommendations of apps and tools y\u2019all like, so let me share a few I heard about:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<ul class=\"duet--article--unordered-list my-20 list-disc pl-18 marker:text-blurple\/100 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><strong>Chatbots. <\/strong>I mean, duh. <a href=\"https:\/\/chat.openai.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ChatGPT<\/strong><\/a> seems to be the overwhelming favorite, but I heard some love for <a href=\"https:\/\/claude.ai\/login?returnTo=\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Claude<\/strong><\/a>, too, and even a little <a href=\"https:\/\/gemini.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Gemini<\/strong><\/a> hype. No love for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Meta AI<\/strong><\/a> just yet, but that might change. Oh, and some definite votes for <a href=\"https:\/\/poe.com\/login\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Poe<\/strong><\/a> as a way to use all the bots in one place.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.perplexity.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Perplexity<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> This one\u2019s half chatbot, half search engine, and it\u2019s probably the most popular thing I heard about this week. As a speedy way to get real-time answers to questions, it\u2019s pretty great.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arc.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Arc<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>A bunch of you like Arc\u2019s \u201cbrowse for me\u201d feature, which summarizes and curates websites for you. Lucky you, I think that feature is about to be in basically every browser everywhere.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/spacebar.fm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Spacebar<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> An app that turns your IRL conversations into \u201cmemos,\u201d with recaps and info about everything you talked about. Would it be weird to pull this out at dinner with friends? Maybe! But I heard some good things, and I\u2019m intrigued.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">More broadly, there were a few use cases I heard a bunch of times, not necessarily tool-specific but instead just something useful you can do with AI:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<ul class=\"duet--article--unordered-list my-20 list-disc pl-18 marker:text-blurple\/100 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><strong>Summarize stuff.<\/strong> This appears to be your go-to use case for AI, and it\u2019s definitely mine, too. What was the gist of that long article you read and already kind of forgot? What\u2019s this true crime doc about?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><strong>Planning things.<\/strong> My other favorite use case: just ask the bot what people like to do wherever you\u2019re going and start your itinerary from there. I loved the email I got from Jeff, who used ChatGPT to summarize a bunch of people\u2019s ideas about where to go in Europe and got a travel itinerary out of it.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><strong>Test your knowledge. <\/strong>This is sort of related to the last one, but I heard from a few folks who said they\u2019ll upload a doc to ChatGPT or Gemini and then have the bot quiz them on its contents. A fun study tool!<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><strong>Check your writing.<\/strong> Lots and lots of grammar checkers out there, it seems. I heard from folks using AI tools to gut check ideas, check for errors, and just make sure all the sentences make sense.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><strong>Make your own art.<\/strong> Whether you\u2019re making playlists, decorating Notion pages, or sketching character ideas for your novel, I heard from folks who love having an endless fountain of new art at their disposal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The overarching theme of your responses was that AI is useful\u2026 as a starting point. It\u2019s a good tool to go from \u201cI have to do a thing\u201d to \u201cI have now done a first, not very good, version of a thing.\u201d Which is progress! If you\u2019d rather edit an email than write one or tweak your presentation rather than build it from scratch, AI can be a help. But do not trust it to finish the job. I\u2019ve tried all of the New York subway apps, even the new official MTA one that\u2019s surprisingly good, but ultimately, nothing comes close to Transit. It has far and away the best user interface, updates fast, and always has what I want right at the surface. It\u2019s just one of those tools you\u2019ll have to pry from my cold, dead hands. The ticker and list UI is the absolute best calendar experience out there. And there are native counterparts on every Apple platform (sans tvOS, for obvious reasons).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">There\u2019s lots of AI stuff here, too. While folks tend to laud Arc Search\u2019s AI-generated webpages that can replace traditional search (which are indeed awesome), I personally just love the care that\u2019s gone into the user interface. I supplement Arc Search with Perplexity, which I tend to use as my go-to for complex deep searches. I find that it\u2019s best at that. Bulletin is a relatively new RSS reader with powerful AI features and a gorgeous design \u2014\u00a0the progressive blurs just make me swoon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Apple Weather and Apple Maps<strong> <\/strong>have gotten really good over the past few years, so I feel less compelled to use third-party alternatives these days. I like Apple Weather so much that I\u2019ve given it a giant widget slot at the top for the hourly forecast. (I have a love \/ hate relationship with widgets on iOS: they take up a lot of space, and I often find more value in having a bunch of app icons.) The app is really nicely designed and a good change of pace from ChatGPT or Poe. In fact, it has no message limit. It\u2019s quite powerful and lets you easily swap models on the fly. You can even build your own bots. It also shares the great haptic feedback that the ChatGPT app introduced.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\">I love smartwatches, but I have a personal affinity for traditional watches. Recently, I got lucky and landed a white <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swatch.com\/en-us\/bioceramic-moonswatch\/mission-to-the-moonphase\/full-moon.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Snoopy edition MoonSwatch<\/strong><\/a>. Not only is it the first all-white bioceramic version but it also has an adorable little Snoopy complication.
