Tom Selleck has revealed he \u2018didn\u2019t get the girl\u2019 during his stint on \u2018The Dating Game\u2019<\/p>\n
The 79-year-old actor made the admission about his humble beginnings in showbusiness in an interview that has resurfaced as he promotes his new autobiography \u2018You Never Know: A Memoir\u2019, which charts the ups-and-downs and \u201cmistakes\u201d of his decades-long TV and film career.<\/p>\n
He told People in the early 1980s about appearing on \u2018The Dating Game\u2019: \u201cI was Bachelor No 2. <\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t get the girl.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tom\u2019s big break was landing the part of private investigator Thomas Magnum on the popular CBS show \u2018Magnum, P.I.\u2019, after he starred in soap opera \u2018The Young and the Restless\u2019 from 1974 to 1975.<\/p>\n
\nHe played Jed Andrews on the show \u2013 the love interest of Jaime Lyn Bauer\u2019s Lorie Brooks.<\/p>\n
\n\u2018Three Men and a Baby\u2019 star Tom has now told People he never wanted to act to achieve fame, adding: \u201cPeople would say, \u2018Oh, he was bitten by the acting bug\u2019, or, \u2018He wanted to be a star\u2019.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI\u2019ve never talked that way in my life. I just wanted to get a job and work.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nTom took four years to finish his memoir, which he says is \u201ca lot about failing: and his \u201cendless failures\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cIf you\u2019re going to get in the acting business, you better get an appetite for it. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd I tried to communicate that… because it was kind of a long road.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nTom also said about being cautious about sharing anecdotes about the slew of famous faces he has met and worked with during his career: \u201cI learned a long time ago, every time you share a story about someone else, they didn’t necessarily say that\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nOne of Tom\u2019s biggest career misses was losing out on playing Indiana Jones in \u2018Raiders of the Lost Ark\u2019 after he was offered the part by the movie\u2019s director Steven Spielberg \u2013 as bosses of \u2018Magnum, P.I.\u2019 wouldn\u2019t let him out of his contract to take it on after the show\u2019s pilot was picked up for a full series.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
