You create a foundation. At least, that\u2019s the approach Home Assistant founder Paulus Schoutsen has chosen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">This week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.home-assistant.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Home Assistant<\/a> announced it is now part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openhomefoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Home Foundation<\/a>. The newly formed non-profit will own and govern all of Home Assistant and its related entities. Its creators and inaugural board members \u2014 Schoutsen, Guy Sie, Pascal Vizeli, and J. Home Assistant can have a steep learning curve, especially when compared to the relative simplicity of a platform like Alexa or Apple Home. Onboarding devices can be complicated, the UI has lots of room for improvement, and integrations can be hit or miss. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cHome Assistant is no one\u2019s first smart home platform,\u201d says Schoutsen. \u201cWhen people outgrow their existing systems and want more advanced control, that\u2019s when they come to Home Assistant.\u201d But he sees that the platform is at a tipping point. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">With the arrival of the industry-backed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/22787729\/matter-smart-home-standard-apple-amazon-google\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smart home standard Matter<\/a> (with which Home Assistant is heavily involved), smart home adoption is pushing into the mainstream. Home Assistant wants to stay swimming alongside Apple, Amazon, Samsung, and Google,\u00a0all of which it\u2019s been competing with in the smart home for roughly a decade now. Home Assistant has never accepted investors, says Schoutsen, and he sees a foundation as the best way to grow. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Schoutsen outlined the platform\u2019s future roadmap at its annual <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Doa__fLArsFk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">State of the Open Home presentation<\/a> on Saturday, April 20th. In an interview ahead of the live stream, he told <em>The Verge<\/em> about some of the bigger changes planned for Home Assistant following this transition:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<ul class=\"duet--article--unordered-list my-20 list-disc pl-18 marker:text-blurple\/100 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23875557\/home-assistant-green-announcement-price-specs-ten-year-anniversary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Home Assistant Green smart home hub<\/a> will be sold on Amazon this year, the first time the organization will sell directly to consumers. A new line of Home Assistant Connect dongles for Thread \/ Zigbee and Z-Wave will follow.<strong> <\/strong>These connect the hub to gadgets that use those protocols (and will replace<strong> <\/strong>the<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23641940\/home-assistant-skyconnect-thread-matter-zigbee-smart-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SkyConnect dongle<\/a>).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/partner.home-assistant.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Home Assistant Works With program<\/a>, which offers certification for products that work with the platform, is expanding. New partners include Aqara, Ultraloq, and Jasco.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\">A new Home Assistant voice control hardware device running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.home-assistant.io\/blog\/2023\/12\/13\/year-of-the-voice-chapter-5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Home Assistant\u2019s local smart home voice assistant<\/a> is planned for release at the end of the year.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\">Home Assistant is working with Nvidia to incorporate a local AI model into the home automation platform.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\">The platform has been researching ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/community.home-assistant.io\/t\/help-us-improve-your-home-approval-factor\/564324\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">improve its UI<\/a> to make it easier for everyone in the home to use Home Assistant. The device should arrive at the end of this year, he says, hinting at a future screen-based device. \u201cWe are looking at screens, nothing official to announce, but we\u2019re looking at E-ink. We don\u2019t need color, as we don\u2019t need ads.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"[&amp;_p]:font-polysans [&amp;_p]:text-16 [&amp;_p]:font-light [&amp;_p]:leading-130\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Home Assistant is exploring incorporating generative AI into home automation but, crucially, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/schoutsen_jetson-ai-lab-research-group-activity-7181139740522336256-k2EX\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">using local processing<\/a>. \u201cSome people are using ChatGPT with Home Assistant, but it\u2019s so slow,\u201d says Schoutsen. They are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/schoutsen_excited-to-have-ollama-running-onboard-jetson-activity-7184294951994691586-l0RB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working with Nvidia<\/a> to use its <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.nvidia.com\/blog\/bringing-generative-ai-to-life-with-jetson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jetson<\/a> platform to power LLMs for Home Assistant.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The collective goal of all these efforts is to move Home Assistant toward becoming a more mainstream, out-of-the-box option for smart home users. \u201cWe want to be a consumer brand,\u201d says Schoutsen. \u201cYou should be able to walk into a Home Depot and be like, \u2018I care about my privacy; this is the smart home hub I need.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The foundation will also advocate for the development of \u201cbetter\u201d smart home products, says Schoutsen, \u201cDevices with local APIs and that are built sustainably. And that we are not for sale,\u201d he says. The <a href=\"https:\/\/community.home-assistant.io\/t\/thinking-big\/69019?page=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launch of the for-profit Nabu Casa five years ago<\/a> provided a revenue stream for Home Assistant through an optional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nabucasa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cloud computing service<\/a> that now supports 33 full-time employees.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The foundation, which was created last month as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swiss_association\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Verein<\/a> (\u201cassociation\u201d) in Switzerland, formally separates Nabu Casa from Home Assistant. The foundation will own all of the open-source projects, standards, drivers, and libraries associated with Home Assistant, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/esphome.io\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESPHome<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/zigpy\/zigpy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ZigPy<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.home-assistant.io\/integrations\/wyoming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wyoming<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Nabu Casa will continue as a for-profit entity running the cloud and selling Home Assistant hardware and will operate as a commercial partner of the foundation. \u201cFunding and support can only flow one way\u2014from Nabu Casa, and any future partners, to the Open Home Foundation and its projects,\u201d says Pascal Vizeli, co-founder of Nabu Casa, and a foundation board member.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">It also protects Home Assistant from being sold. Swiss law prohibits members of a non-profit Verein from benefiting from it, Schoutsen explained to <em>The Verge<\/em>. \u201cOur articles state \u2018There will be no direct distribution to members in return for activities performed for the association or as any other form of gratuity in any kind,\u2019\u2019\u2019 he says. The platform is open; maybe at some point, there might be a split where we have the basic UI and the advanced UI; I don\u2019t know how that\u2019s going to work.
