The Golden Bachelor<\/em><\/a>\u2018s Gerry Turner<\/strong><\/a> and Theresa Nist<\/strong><\/a> fought about her job and her desire to keep working prior to the \u200bestranged couple\u2019s divorce announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI still work, so that\u2019s the hurdle,\u201d Theresa, 70, revealed as one of their relationship issues during a March appearance on the \u201cDear Shandy<\/a>\u201d podcast alongside her then-husband.<\/p>\n The New Jersey resident works as a compliance officer<\/a> and was grateful to get as much time off as she did to appear on The Golden Bachelor<\/em>. Thus, she wasn\u2019t ready to leave them in a lurch by quitting after the couple married on January 4 in a televised ceremony on ABC<\/a>.<\/p>\n Theresa told her bosses she was only going to be away for two weeks when she went on the show. \u201cI honestly thought, \u2018Oh, let me just get through the first night,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I stayed and I stayed and I stayed, and my employer was so good to me. And before I left, I kind of said, \u2018Don\u2019t worry, I\u2019m not going to leave you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n After their wedding, Theresa wasn\u2019t ready to quit her job and leave New Jersey until she and Gerry, 72, decided on where they would settle down together as husband and wife.<\/p>\n \u201cUntil we decide on a place to really live, then I can really make a big decision to say, \u2018OK, we\u2019re going to live in this place or that place,\u201d she said at the time. \u201cAnd originally, it was South Carolina. We\u2019re still not sure if that\u2019s what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n Gerry appeared on the podcast with his bride and said her working was putting a cramp in the plans the retiree had for their future<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI guess the difficult part is I went on to the show to find my partner, and I\u2019ve been retired for a long time. I wanted fun [and] adventure. I wanted to go do [things],\u201d the former restaurateur explained.<\/p>\n \u201cSo that is the crux of it, right now, is when does that start? I think the living arrangement is really secondary to the freedom of being able to go and enjoy life and do,\u201d he continued, seemingly hinting that her work was holding them back from being able to live the life he wanted.<\/p>\n Gerry referred to Theresa\u2019s work as a \u201churdle\u201d that was \u201cstill there.\u201d He added, \u201cAnd right now, we\u2019re dealing with it. It\u2019s just something we\u2019re gonna have to find a way around.\u201d<\/p>\n Ultimately there was no way around it, as Gerry wanted to remain living life as a retiree at his Indiana lake house<\/a> while Theresa continued to work and live in New Jersey. ABC\u2019s first Golden Bachelor said their living situation proved to be something they couldn\u2019t agree on.<\/p>\n \u201cTheresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations and we\u2019ve looked closely at our situation \u2014 our living situation \u2014 and we\u2019ve kind of come to the conclusion mutually that it\u2019s time for us to dissolve our marriage<\/a>,\u201d Gerry told Good Morning America<\/em> host Juju Chang<\/strong> in a joint interview with Theresa on April 12.<\/p>\n Later that day he filed for divorce in Petersburg, Indiana, citing an \u201cirretrievable breakdown\u201d of their three-month marriage.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
