The Notorious B.I.G.<\/strong><\/a> is in the Library of Congress.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, April 16, the National Recording Registry announced its 2024 selection. The NRR, a collection of recordings administered by the United States Library of Congress, seeks to preserve \u201cthe defining sounds of history and culture.\u201d The late Biggie Smalls\u2019 debut album, 1994\u2019s Ready to Die<\/em>, was one of the 25 selections made this year.<\/p>\n

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden<\/strong> also picked The Cars\u2019 1978 self-titled album, ABBA\u2019s Arrival<\/em>, Blondie\u2019s Parallel Lines<\/em> and Jefferson Airplane\u2019s Surrealistic Pillow<\/em> for the NRR. The Chicks\u2019 1998 album, Wide Open Spaces<\/em>, and Green Day\u2019s landmark 1994 album<\/a>, Dookie<\/em>, were also among the recordings set to be preserved.<\/p>\n

Lily Tomlin<\/strong>\u2019s This Is a Recording<\/em> became the first comedy album by a woman to be inducted into the Registry. Other selections included Bobby McFerrin<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cDon\u2019t Worry, Be Happy,\u201d Gene Autry<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cRudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,\u201d Perry Como<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cCatch a Falling Star,\u201d Bill Withers<\/strong>\u2019 \u201cAin\u2019t No Sunshine,\u201d Doug E. Fresh<\/strong> and Slick Rick<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cLa-Di-Da-Di\u201d and Johnny Mathis<\/strong>\u2019 \u201cChances Are.\u201d<\/p>\n

The National Recording Preservation Act of 2000 created the National Recording Preservation Board to \u201censure the survival, conservation and increased public availability of America\u2019s audio heritage,\u201d according to the NRPB\u2019s mission statement. Since 2002, the Library of Congress has picked 25 recordings deemed \u201caudio treasures<\/a>\u201d to be preserved every year.<\/p>\n

Some of the first recordings to be inducted into the registry were Ray Charles<\/strong>\u2019 \u201cWhat\u2019d I Say,\u201d Orson Welles<\/strong>\u2019 \u201cWar of the Worlds\u201d broadcast from 1938, Abbott and Costello<\/strong>\u2019s first broadcast of the \u201cWho\u2019s on First?\u201d routine, Elvis Presley<\/strong>\u2019s Sun Records sessions, the 1909 recording of the Fisk Jubilee Singers performing \u201cSwing Low, Sweet Chariot\u201d and Grandmaster Flash<\/strong> and the Furious Five\u2019s \u201cThe Message.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGetty Images (3) 1994 was a transcendent year for music, and the number of now-classic albums celebrating their 30th anniversary this year is staggering. The mid-\u201990s saw hip-hop transform, regaining some of its edge and danger. The West Coast had already made a claim as king of the genre in the early \u201990s, prompting New [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Other entries in the National Registry include The Beatles\u2019 Sgt. Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band<\/em>, Chuck Berry<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cRoll Over Beethoven,\u201d Patsy Cline<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cCrazy,\u201d Little Richard<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cTutti Frutti,\u201d Johnny Cash<\/strong>\u2019s At Folsom Prison<\/em>, Nirvana\u2019s Nevermind<\/em>, John Coltrane<\/strong>\u2019s Giant Steps<\/em>, the Ramones\u2019 self-titled debut album, Frank Zappa<\/strong> and the Mothers of Invention\u2019s We\u2019re Only in It for the Money<\/em>, Tupac Shakur<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cDear Mama\u201d and Public Enemy\u2019s Fear of a Black Planet<\/em>.<\/p>\n
