Many of Taylor Swift\u2019s<\/strong> <\/a>recent albums initially portrayed a fairytale love story with ex Joe Alwyn<\/strong><\/a>, but a deeper look at some of the singer\u2019s lyrics hint that the relationship turned rocky long before their split.<\/p>\n

After falling in love with Alwyn, 32, in 2016, Swift, 34, disappeared from the public eye only to return in 2017 to drop her \u201ccomeback\u201d record Reputation<\/em>. Although disguised as a revenge album, Rep<\/em> was filled with songs like\u00a0 \u201cGorgeous,\u201d \u201cDelicate,\u201d \u201cCall It What You Want\u201d and \u201cNew Year\u2019s Day,\u201d all of which gave a glimpse into the beginning of her romance with Alwyn.<\/p>\n

Swift\u2019s 2019 follow-up, Lover,<\/em> appeared to be<\/a> a continuation of the pair\u2019s story. Trading dark aesthetics and snakes for pastel pink and butterflies, Swift set out to write a straightforward romance album, with the title track being her most swoon-worthy yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had been thinking for years, like, \u2018God, it would just be so great to have a song that people who are in love would want to dance to. Like, slow dance to,\u201d Swift told The New York Times<\/em> in 2019. \u201cIn my head I had just the last two people on a dance floor at 3 a.m., swaying.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swift admitted, however, that an underlying sense of tension<\/a> also existed in the lyrics. \u201cI wanted the chorus to be, like, really simple existential questions that we ask ourselves when we are in love. \u2018Can I go where you go?\u2019 is such a heavy thing to ask someone. \u2018Can we always be this close?\u2019 has so much fear in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other tracks on the album reflect a similar type of anxiety. \u201cCornelia Street\u201d \u2014 a song that was first perceived as a passionate love song for Swift and Alwyn \u2014 has a fair amount of unease. Swift labels her lover as a \u201ccard shark playing games\u201d in the verses, claiming he was \u201cleading her on\u201d before catching her just in time.<\/p>\n

Lover\u2019s<\/em> fifth track, \u201cThe Archer,\u201d is mostly about Swift\u2019s battle within herself, but touches on a sense of hope that she\u2019s found someone who will stick by her. However, she still phrases the lyrics as questions, not statements. \u201cWho could ever leave me darling \/ But who could stay? \/ You could stay?\u201d she asks in the chorus.<\/p>\n

Much of her next record, 2020\u2019s Folklore<\/em>, stems from fictional circumstances, but one of the last tracks, titled \u201cPeace,\u201d once again describes Swift\u2019s personal fears of a partner who can\u2019t handle her highly publicized life.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was making Folklore<\/em>, I went lyrically in a total direction of escapism and romanticism. And I wrote songs imagining I was, like, a pioneer woman in a forbidden love affair,\u201d Swift told Paul McCartney<\/strong> during a November 2020 interview for Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>, before noting that \u201cPeace\u201d was \u201cactually more rooted in [her] personal life\u201d than other tracks.<\/p>\n

During their nearly six-year romance, Swift and Alwyn notoriously tried to remain out of the spotlight. The pair never walked a single red carpet together \u2014 even when attending the same events \u2014 and were often spotted running to their cars to avoid being photographed. When Swift won Best Album at the Grammys for Folkore<\/em> in 2021, Alwyn was not in the audience, despite being credited as a cowriter on multiple tracks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that in knowing him and being in the relationship I am in now, I have definitely made decisions that have made my life feel more like a real life and less like just a storyline to be commented on in tabloids,\u201d Swift told McCartney in 2020. \u201cWhether that\u2019s deciding where to live, who to hang out with, when to not take a picture \u2014 the idea of privacy feels so strange to try to explain, but it\u2019s really just trying to find bits of normalcy. That\u2019s what that song \u2018Peace\u2019 is talking about. Like, would it be enough if I could never fully achieve the normalcy that we both crave?\u201d<\/p>\n

There are also songs like \u201cMidnight Rain\u201d and \u201cQuestion.\u201d These tracks zero in on past relationships that could have been, raising eyebrows with fans who noticed that Swift was still with Alwyn when she wrote them. The Vault Track \u201cYou\u2019re Losing Me,\u201d however, might be the most telling.<\/p>\n

Written in December 2021 \u2014 more than a year before she called it quits with Alwyn \u2014 the gut-wrenching ballad details a relationship where Swift is begging <\/a>her partner to see her pain.<\/p>\n
