Dbrand, the phone case company known for its sassy attitude toward users<\/a> and tech companies<\/a>, gave $10,000 to a customer as an apology after it made a racist comment about their last name. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n On Tuesday, Dbrand reposted<\/a> a complaint from a customer, Bhuwan Chitransh, who said that the skin they purchased for their MacBook changed color after just two months. Dbrand replied with a crude message that rhymed the customer\u2019s name with \u201crash.\u201d Chitransh\u00a0later responded<\/a>, saying Dbrand\u2019s post reflects its racist perspective toward Indian customers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The following day, the company said<\/a> that it had made a \u201chuge fumble.\u201d Dbrand said it apologized to Chitransh and offered him $10,000 \u201cas a gesture of goodwill.\u201d However, Dbrand didn\u2019t delete the original post until tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee made a post early Thursday morning, saying it caused \u201cunnecessary\u201d harm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cWon\u2019t be working with dbrand until that original tweet is deleted, at least,\u201d Brownlee said<\/a>. \u201cYou\u2019re allowed to make shitty jokes, but the internet has made it pretty clear what it think[s] about this one, and the harm from it is unnecessary.\u201d Dbrand deleted the post hours later, acknowledging<\/a> that it \u201ccreated a platform for hateful discourse.\u201d Brownlee, who has worked with Dbrand<\/a> on a line of icon-filled device skins, said it was \u201cgood to have you back\u201d after the company deleted its post. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n In a statement to The Verge<\/em>, Dbrand CEO Adam Ijaz says the comment was a \u201csevere lapse in judgment,\u201d adding that Brownlee\u2019s support helped the company \u201creflect more carefully\u201d on how the comment created a \u201cplatform for vitriol.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve been playing this gambit of poking fun at customers on social media for over a decade now,\u201d Ijaz says. \u201cMoving forward, our aim is to maintain the satire without resorting to insensitivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
