Kevin Costner<\/strong><\/a> has starred as patriarch John Dutton on the wildly successful Yellowstone<\/em><\/a> since 2018, but he\u2019s been playing it coy about if he\u2019ll return for the final episodes of season 5 once production gets underway. Fans want to know what he\u2019s said about coming back to finish the show.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019d like to be able to do it but we haven\u2019t been able to,\u201d Kevin told Entertainment Tonight<\/em><\/a> on April 9, 2024, seemingly referring to his clashes with show creator Taylor Sheridan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Noting the Yellowstone<\/em> spinoffs<\/a> either currently airing or in \u200bpreproduction, he continued, \u201cI thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we\u2019re at five. So how it works out \u2013 I hope it does \u2013 but they\u2019ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIf it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I\u2019d love to do it,\u201d Kevin said about returning to finish off the series.<\/p>\n After the Waterworld<\/em> star reportedly wanted a say in how his character would be written out of the show, Taylor told The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/em> in June 2023, \u201cWhether [Dutton\u2019s fate] inflates [Kevin\u2019s] ego or insults is collateral damage that I don\u2019t factor in with regard to storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n After originating the role of John Dutton ever since the series premiered on the Paramount Network, Kevin hinted in 2022 that he might leave the show for other projects.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ll go till it doesn\u2019t feel like we\u2019re interesting, and right now we have our foot on the gas and that feels OK to me,\u201d he told Entertainment Tonight<\/em><\/a> at the time. \u201cI have interests that are outside of everything I do, including the movies, so I have other things that I want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n Kevin and Taylor began clashing when the Oscar winner wanted to spend more time shooting his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cHis movie seems to be a great priority to him and he wants to shift focus. I sure hope [the movie is] worth it and that it\u2019s a good one,\u201d Taylor \u200btold THR<\/em>. He added how it would affect Kevin\u2019s departure from Yellowstone<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m disappointed. It truncates the closure of his character. It doesn\u2019t alter it, but it truncates it.\u201d<\/p>\n The Paramount Network confirmed in May 2023 that the show\u2019s fifth season would be its last<\/a>. The first half of the season premiered in November 2022<\/a> and broke records, garnering more than 17 million total viewers according to the network.<\/p>\n Kevin was busy shooting Horizon: An American Saga<\/em>, in the spring of 2023, then production was pushed back even further due to the Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild strikes later that year.<\/p>\n Several members of the cast have said they\u2019re not sure when the show would resume filming.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m still waiting to find out what\u2019s happening with Yellowstone. I have absolutely no clue. I did talk to Kelly Reilly<\/strong> [who plays Beth Dutton] the other day and, you know, we\u2019ll see what happens. Once they give us the call<\/a> \u2013 we\u2019re there,\u201d Lainey Wilson<\/strong>, who played Abby in the first half of season 5, told Fox News on the red carpet of the iHeartRadio Music Awards on April 1, 2024.<\/p>\n \u201cWe will go back, rumor has it, in May. We should be on in November, roughly,\u201d Ian Bohen<\/strong> told Entertainment Tonigh<\/em>t while attending the Elton John Aids Foundation Oscars party in March 2024 about when the show could return to production.<\/p>\n The actor added, \u201cYou\u2019re gonna have to give me some leeway on that. It\u2019s not gonna be sooner than that.
