I think \u2018cult\u2019 is a word that is bandied around a lot, and we were very careful when we decided to use it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Orner is referring to the name of her latest documentary, <em>Brandy Hellville &amp; the Cult of Fast Fashion,<\/em> which debuts on HBO on April 9. In it, the Oscar winner (<em>Taxi to the Dark Side<\/em>) unspools the dark inner workings of a fast fashion company that targets teens and has been worn by the likes of <strong>Kaia Gerber<\/strong> and <strong>Kendall Jenner.<\/strong> According to the doc, beneath soft baby-tees emblazoned with sayings like \u201cStressed, Depressed, But Well Dressed\u201d is a shadowy operation that both preys upon and profits off female insecurity. The words \u201cantisemitism,\u201d \u201cracism,\u201d and \u201csexism\u201d are tossed out within the first three minutes of the film regarding certain executives, a harbinger of dark deeds to be revealed. Brandy Melville did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cMost companies maybe do one bad thing,\u201d says Orner. With Brandy Melville, \u201csomething bad happens, and then something worse happens. And it just keeps going. By the end, your jaw is on the floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Orner, an Australian who drives an electric car and has adopted a vegetarian diet, was introduced to Brandy Melville by Oscar-nominated producer <strong>Jonathan<\/strong> <strong>Chinn<\/strong> (<em>Black Sheep<\/em>) and Oscar-winning producer <strong>Simon Chinn<\/strong> (<em>Searching for Sugar Man<\/em>). As the film shows, the store presents itself as less of a label than as a lifestyle. Brandy Melville hires beautiful girls who seem popular\u2014typically thin, white, and under the age of 18\u2014who are often recruited while shopping in the store, the doc claims. Candidates are asked to submit full-body photos and offer up their social media handles in the place of any skill-based qualifications, said one former employee that Orner interviewed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Staff members of color are hired but are often relegated to working in stock rooms, ex-employees told the filmmaker. Those who work at a store\u2019s entrance\u2014all of whom must fit the \u201cone size fits most\u201d clothes the company carries\u2014are required to take daily \u201cstore style\u201d photos that are sent to Brandy Melville\u2019s enigmatic founder, former workers in the doc explained. Employees could be\u2014and <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.nl\/brandy-melvilles-ceo-doesnt-want-black-people-to-wear-the-brands-clothing-according-to-an-ex-store-owner\/\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.businessinsider.nl\/brandy-melvilles-ceo-doesnt-want-black-people-to-wear-the-brands-clothing-according-to-an-ex-store-owner\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.nl\/brandy-melvilles-ceo-doesnt-want-black-people-to-wear-the-brands-clothing-according-to-an-ex-store-owner\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly were<\/a>\u2014hired and fired based on such images. \u201cThey\u2019re like 16-year-old girls. You can find, like, 700 different reasons to fire them,\u201d one anonymous company employee says in the doc. \u201cLike, it\u2019s too easy. It wasn\u2019t even fair.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">All of this information was unearthed before Orner began working on her film through lawsuits brought against the company and reporting by <strong>Kate Taylor,<\/strong> an investigative journalist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/brandy-melville-15-million-settlement-class-action-lawsuit-2022-12?op=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Business Insider<\/a>. (Brandy Melville denied all wrongdoing in a 2022 class-action lawsuit brought by ex-employees. The company settled for $1.5 million.) But the revelations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/style\/fashion\/a-hit-brands-one-size-fits-most-clothing-is-dividing-americas-teens-c6da9cc0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">haven\u2019t made much of a dent<\/a> in Brandy Melville\u2019s revenue. \u201cThere <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/brandy-melville-racist-sexist-antisemitic-group-chat-2021-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has been an expos\u00e9<\/a> on this company. A lot of young girls know that the company\u2019s not great, but they still shop there,\u201d Orner explains. \u201cAnd I find that really disturbing. There comes a point in your life where you have to [decide], What kind of person do I want to be? When a brand\u2019s been exposed as being really shit, you can get clothes elsewhere. The fact that people are so locked into this brand is really surprising.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Orner set out to make a film that would contextualize the company\u2019s ethical issues within a larger environmental landscape. Her cameras traveled to the far reaches of Prato, Italy\u2014where Brandy Melville\u2019s clothing is produced in crowded factories\u2014and Ghana, which has become a dumping ground for heaps of unwanted garments. In the documentary, former staff members said that higher-ups would buy the non-Brandy shirts off their backs so they could replicate and mass produce their design\u2014a practice that has led to <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.apparelnews.net\/news\/2016\/sep\/01\/forever-21-sues-brandy-melville-copyright-infringe\/\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.apparelnews.net\/news\/2016\/sep\/01\/forever-21-sues-brandy-melville-copyright-infringe\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apparelnews.net\/news\/2016\/sep\/01\/forever-21-sues-brandy-melville-copyright-infringe\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">copyright infringement suits<\/a> against the brand.
