It\u2019d only raised about $15 million ahead of its latest cash infusion.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Green Li-ion announced a $20.5 million \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/green-li-ion-secures-usd20-5-million-in-pre-series-b-funding-to-scale-lithium-ion-battery-recycling-technology-globally-301773069.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pre-Series B<\/a>\u201d round led by climate-tech investor TRIREC. The startup said other investors, including SOSV and Equinor Ventures (the VC arm of the Norway-owned fossil fuel giant), also chipped in.<\/p>\n<p>The deal boosts Green Li-ion\u2019s post-money valuation to $187 million after just three years, chief executive Leon Farrant told TechCrunch. The startup\u2019s logo is (you guessed it!) a green lion.<\/p>\n<p>The new cash will help the startup scale production of its recycling tech, which the firm says can process \u201c100% of all used lithium batteries\u201d and pop out precursor cathode active material that\u2019ll eventually go into fresh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/energysaver\/articles\/how-does-lithium-ion-battery-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lithium-ion<\/a> batteries.<\/p>\n<p>Lithium is in high demand and mining the metal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/06\/business\/lithium-mining-race.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wreaks havoc on the environment<\/a>, making recycling tech a crucial tool in lowering the footprint of things like electric cars and storage for renewable energy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2515193\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2515193\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2515193\" src=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/green-li-ion.gif\" alt=\"A time lapse of Green Li-ion's recycling machines being installed in a large warehouse.\" width=\"480\" height=\"272\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2515193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Image Credits:<\/strong> Green Li-ion<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Green Li-ion doesn\u2019t recycle batteries itself; it licenses its tech to battery makers and recyclers, including Aleon and TES (which is owned by SK, the South Korea-based fossil fuel giant).
