Bernie Sanders\u2019 Vermont Office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"has-dropcap\">Police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/05\/us\/fire-bernie-sanders-office.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are searching<\/a> for a suspect in what appears to have been an attempted arson at the Burlington, Vermont office of Senator <strong>Bernie Sanders<\/strong> (I-Vt.).<\/p>\n<p>At around 10:45 a.m. on Friday, a man entered Sanders\u2019 office before spraying an \u201capparent accelerant\u201d on an entrance door, Burlington police said in a statement. After the man lit the flammable substance, \u201ca significant fire engulfed the door and part of the vestibule, impeding the egress of staff members who were working in the office and endangering their lives,\u201d police said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Vermont State Police determined Friday that the fire was intentionally set but have yet to confirm a motive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">When local firefighters arrived at the office, they found \u201ca fire in the vestibule between the elevator and the entrance door to [Sanders\u2019] office,\u201d according to a department press release. Burlington police said the building\u2019s sprinkler system kicked in and \u201cengaged and largely extinguished the fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The suspect fled the office and was still at large on Saturday. In an effort to identify him, local police released a photo from a surveillance camera showing him carrying a light-colored bag and wearing an orange beanie, dark jacket, and pants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Sanders wasn\u2019t in the office Friday morning, and no injuries were reported. The Burlington fire department said that the third floor of the building, which houses Sanders\u2019 only congressional office in his home state, sustained \u201csignificant water damage\u201d when sprinklers kicked in to extinguish the fire.
