Each collection features existing songs from her discography.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth playlist, titled \u201cOld Habits Die Screaming\u201d \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/is-taylor-swift-dropping-1st-tortured-poets-department-single\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">title of a track<\/a> off <em>TTPD<\/em> \u2014 focuses on the concept of depression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[This playlist] the feelings of depression that often lace their way through my songs,\u201d Swift says in a voice message. \u201cIn times like these, I\u2019ll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/taylor-swifts-the-tortured-poets-department-tracklist-fan-theories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">write a song<\/a> because I feel lonely or hopeless. And writing a song feels like the only way to process that intensity of an emotion. And while these things are really, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/taylor-swift-says-writing-tortured-poets-department-was-a-lifeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">really hard to go through<\/a>, I often feel like when I\u2019m either listening to songs or writing songs that deal with this intensity of loss and hopelessness, usually that\u2019s in the phase where I\u2019m close to getting past that feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"link-related article\">\n<div class=\"article__content\">\n<h3 class=\"article__title\">\n\t\t\t<a class=\"article__title-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/a-guide-to-taylor-swifts-tortured-poets-department-bonus-versions\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"related-badge\">Related: <\/span><span class=\"related-title\">A Guide to Taylor Swift&#8217;s &#8216;The Tortured Poets Department&#8217; Bonus Versions<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n\t\t<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t\tTaylor Swift is treating her fans to more than one version of her upcoming 11th studio album. Three editions of The Tortured Poets Department, the original and two bonus versions, will be released on Friday, April 19. In addition to the 16 songs from the standard edition, each album variation will feature one of three [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Upon listening, eagle-eyed fans quickly realized that many of the playlist\u2019s songs feature references to an elusive hallway. In \u201cConey Island,\u201d off Swift\u2019s 2020 album <em>Evermore<\/em>, she sings, \u201cWere you standing in the hallway with a big cake? \/\u00a0<span class=\"mark2bnre92rr uM2yb\" data-markjs=\"true\">Happy birthday<\/span>\u00a0\/ Did I paint your bluest skies the darkest grey? \/ A universe away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An incident in the hallway is also mentioned in<em> Midnights\u2019<\/em> \u201cMaroon,\u201d another track speculated to be about Swift\u2019s ex. \u201cYou were standing hollow-eyed in the hallway \/ Carnations you had thought were roses, that\u2019s us,\u201d she sings in the second verse. (Continuing with the motif in \u201cConey Island,\u201d carnations are typically given to celebrate a person\u2019s birthday.)<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, lyrics for \u201cYou\u2019re Losing Me,\u201d the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/does-taylor-swifts-tortured-poets-department-detail-stages-of-grief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gut-wrenching track<\/a> off <em>Midnights<\/em>, reads: \u201cNow you\u2019re running down the hallway \/ And I guess that\u2019s what they all say \/ That you don\u2019t know what you\u2019ve got until it\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConey Island,\u201d \u201cMaroon\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019re Losing Me\u201d are all breakup-inspired songs, but ones that take place in a time right before an actual heartbreak occurs. All three songs contemplate whether to stay or leave a relationship that was once filled with love and deep affection. The space between staying and leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A third fan pointed out the similarities between Swift\u2019s writing style and that of the classic poets. \u201cA lot of poets (ie <strong>TS Eliot<\/strong>) use hallways as a liminal space, a place where you become untethered and isolated between defined areas in life that provide resolution and clarity,\u201d they explained. \u201cI think she uses hallways as a metaphor for describing the turmoil and instability in the relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But why do fans think all the hallways could be about Alwyn? A color just might hold the answer. The Grammy winner has famously referenced various shades of blue while singing about Alwyn, 32, and \u201cConey Island\u201d is one of those songs. The track also mentions gray, a color referenced in \u201cYou\u2019re Losing Me.\u201d Seeing the pattern?<\/p>\n<p>Although Swift and Alwyn called it quits for good last spring, rumors swirled that the pair had a bumpy relationship for years.
