Behind-the-scenes support!\u00a0<\/a>Outlander<\/a>, Sex\/Life\u00a0<\/a><\/i>and more TV shows and movies have hired intimacy coordinators<\/a> to manage sex scenes \u2014 and the stars have found these roles make them feel safer.<\/p>\n \u201cI brought on board the intimacy advisor\u00a0Vanessa Coffey<\/strong>\u00a0because, with intimate scenes, it\u2019s important that everyone is protected, but also we find a way to explore these scenes and actually maybe get something more out of them,\u201d Sam Heughan<\/strong><\/a>, who portrays Jamie Fraser on STARZ\u2019s Outlander<\/i><\/a>, said during a March 2022 appearance on the\u00a0\u201cHappy Sad Confused\u201d<\/a>\u00a0podcast. \u201cI think this season we\u2019ve done an even better job with those types of scenes because she really helped us understand what we are doing<\/a> and how we build up this relationship and take it somewhere else, so she\u2019s been terrific.\u201d<\/p>\n Outlander<\/i>, which debuts its seventh season in late 2023<\/a>, premiered in August 2014 at a \u201cvery different time\u201d in Hollywood. Heughan, for his part, has been candid about filming his character\u2019s difficult sexual assault scene<\/a> \u2014 and how he felt some of the production\u2019s direction seemed unnecessary.<\/p>\n \u201cThis wasn\u2019t a moment where I felt that being naked would add to the horror of what Jamie undergoes in that castle dungeon as a form of punishment, subjugation and humiliation,\u201d the\u00a0Men in Kilts\u00a0<\/i>alum wrote in his\u00a0Waypoints\u00a0<\/i>memoir<\/a>, which was published in October 2022. \u201cI pushed back, reasoning that nudity sexualized a horrific experience for my character, and it sparked quite a debate. Creative conversations are a feature of all productions, good art is made by questioning the truth and we all want to get it right.\u201d<\/p>\n Heughan added at the time: \u201cIt would have been handled differently [if it was filmed today]. Times have changed. The [full-frontal] shot was unnecessary and did betray my trust in the creative team<\/a> a bit. We don\u2019t need to see the horror to imagine what the characters go through. Imagination is way more powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n Sex\/Life\u00a0<\/i>\u2014 which premiered its first season on Netflix in June 2021<\/a> \u2014 also features plenty of racy, NSFW scenes<\/a> between stars Sarah Shahi<\/strong><\/a> and Adam Demos<\/strong><\/a>, who sparked a real-life romance on set<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cMy task early on in the season was No. 1, to check in with them and go, \u2018OK, so you\u2019re together this season, how can I help you feel safe?\u2019\u201d intimacy coordinator Casey Hudecki<\/strong> exclusively told\u00a0Us Weekly\u00a0<\/i>in March 2023<\/a>. \u201c\u2018How can I help you protect your relationship as your characters go off and have other relationships?\u00a0How can I help the actors who are \u2026 being their scene partners to feel safe<\/a> and to feel free even though they know that, you know, Adam and Sarah [are] together?\u2019 So there\u2019s a lot of talking.\u201d<\/p>\n The\u00a0L Word\u00a0<\/i>alum \u2014 who was previously married to Steve Howey<\/strong><\/a>, with whom she shares son William and twins Violet and Knox<\/a> \u2014 and Demos debuted their relationship in 2020<\/a> while filming season 1. By the drama\u2019s second season, they were pros at their steamy scenes.<\/p>\n \u201cI think with Adam and Sarah, they feel safe together and\u00a0they\u2019re very comfortable<\/a> with each other,\u201d\u00a0Hudecki recalled to\u00a0Us<\/i>. \u201cI think in their scenes, they\u2019re free to have a lot more fun and play with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n
