Ben Affleck<\/strong><\/a> has been vocal about his sobriety throughout his career, starting with his openness about his family history and rehab stays.<\/p>\n Before the Dazed and Confused<\/em> actor<\/a> rose to fame in the early \u201890s, his parents divorced when he was just 12 years old. At the time, Affleck didn\u2019t know that his father was an alcoholic<\/a>, but he told Barbara Walters<\/strong><\/a> in 2012 that he recalled his dad drinking \u201ca lot.\u201d He explained: \u201cHe, you know, drank all day, every day and to his credit, he got sober ultimately.\u201d<\/p>\n After starring in Good Will Hunting<\/em> with his longtime friend Matt Damon<\/strong><\/a>, Affleck chose to stop drinking in 1997. \u201cI just wanted to stop. I started regretting some things I did when I was drunk,\u201d he told a reporter at the time via Fox News<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s funny to be obnoxious or out of control, but then it\u2019s like, \u2018I think I hurt that person\u2019s feelings, \u2018I made a fool of myself\u2019 or \u2018I didn\u2019t want to kiss that girl.\u2019 I have almost no inhibitions, so it\u2019s dangerous for me<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n It wasn\u2019t until 2001 that the Pearl Harbor<\/em> actor sought treatment for his alcoholism<\/a>. He has since been to rehab multiple times<\/a>, including a stay in 2017 and 2018. Us Weekly<\/em> confirmed that his August 2018 stay came after his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner<\/strong><\/a>, with whom he shares daughters Violet and Seraphina and son Samuel, staged an intervention with the help of a sober coach<\/a> at his California home.<\/p>\n The Runner<\/em> producer suffered another setback in October 2019<\/a>, two months after celebrating one-year of sobriety<\/a>. Affleck was photographed leaving a Halloween party intoxicated.<\/p>\n Four months later, Affleck spoke out about the incident and opened up about his family\u2019s history of \u201calcoholism and mental illness\u201d during a New York Times<\/em><\/a> interview, saying, \u201cThe legacy of that is quite powerful and somethings hard to shake.\u201d<\/p>\n The Deep Water<\/em> actor<\/a> explained that his father \u201cdidn\u2019t really get sober\u201d until he was 19, noting it wasn\u2019t easy to diagnose himself as an alcoholic despite seeing it in his family.<\/p>\n \u201cIt took me a long time to fundamentally, deeply, without a hint of doubt, admit to myself that I am an alcoholic<\/a>. The next drink will not be different,\u201d he said in February 2020.<\/p>\n After his Halloween relapse, Affleck admitted that falling off the wagon \u201cis embarrassing,\u201d telling the outlet he wished it didn\u2019t happen. \u201cI really wish it wasn\u2019t on the internet for my kids to see. Jen and I did our best to address it and be honest<\/a>,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n In January 2021, Affleck revealed during an episode of The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u2019s \u201cAwards Chatter\u201d podcast<\/a> that he feels \u201creally good\u201d despite having sober slips here and there.<\/p>\n
