Kennedy Jr.<\/strong> announced that his 2024 running mate will not be Aaron Rodgers<\/strong><\/a> or Jesse Ventura<\/strong><\/a>,<\/strong> but Silicon Valley lawyer (and Sergey Brin<\/strong> ex<\/a>) Nicole Shanahan.<\/strong> What is there to know about Kennedy\u2019s VP pick? For starters: At a time when in vitro fertilization is under serious threat<\/a>, she\u2019s a major critic of the procedure that has helped millions of people become parents.<\/p>\n Politico reports<\/a> that Shanahan has \u201cfor years denounced IVF.\u201d In February, she told<\/a> the Australian Financial Review that IVF is \u201cone of the biggest lies that\u2019s being told about women\u2019s health today.\u201d In a 2023 interview with The<\/em> New Yorker,<\/em> she told<\/a> the outlet, \u201cMany of the I.V.F. clinics are financially incentivized to offer you egg freezing and I.V.F. and not incentivized to offer you other fertility services.\u201d In an essay for People<\/em> published in 2022, she wrote<\/a> \u201cI believe IVF is sold irresponsibly, and in my own experience with natural childbirth has led me to understand that the fertility industry is deeply flawed.\u201d While criticizing IVF, Shanahan has also called for research into things like sunlight exposure to help women have children. \u201cI\u2019m not sure that there has been a really thorough mitochondrial respiration study on the effects of two hours of morning sunlight on reproductive health. I would love to fund something like that,\u201d she said<\/a> during a 2023 panel with the National Academy of Medicine, a group she had given $100 million. The statement was met with laughs, to which she responded: \u201cYeah, let\u2019s do it…I just have an intuition that could be interesting and maybe work.\u201d<\/p>\n Elsewhere, it will perhaps not come as a surprise that Kennedy\u2019s running mate has questions about vaccines, and takes umbrage with the term \u201canti-vaxxer.\u201d Speaking to The<\/em> New York Times<\/em> earlier this year, she said<\/a> \u201cI do wonder about vaccine injuries.\u201d While insisting she is \u201cnot an anti-vaxxer,\u201d she told the outlet \u201cI think there needs to be a space to have these conversations.\u201d In an interview with Newsweek, she boldly suggested<\/a> Kennedy is not anti-vaccine<\/a>, despite the fact that, as CNN notes<\/a>, \u201cKennedy is among the most prominent vaccine skeptics in the country and, through his role as the head of Children\u2019s Health Defense, has helped spread falsehoods about vaccines, including the claim that they can lead to \u2018injuries\u2019.\u201d In her interview with Newsweek, Shanahan said that she received a Moderna COVID-19 vaccine and a booster and later suffered from \u201csignificant health issues.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t know if they\u2019re related,\u201d she said, \u201cbut I\u2019d love to know.\u201d<\/p>\n Before Shanahan was officially added to the ticket, she was a \u201cmajor source<\/a>\u201d of funding\u2014and creative input\u2014for the Kennedy campaign ad that ran during the Super Bowl and was condemned<\/a> by more than one member of the Kennedy family.
