Apple\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/3\/6\/24092026\/heres-the-new-ios-default-browser-nag-for-iphone-users-in-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">browser choice screen<\/a> for iOS is also being investigated as well as Meta\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/2\/29\/24086424\/metas-consent-or-pay-approach-to-privacy-targeted-by-eu-watchdogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pay or consent model<\/a>\u201d for ad targeting. In a press conference, the Commission said it plans to conclude the investigations within the next 12 months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Additionally, the EU regulator is also looking into the fee structure Apple announced for distributing apps outside of the App Store, as well as whether Amazon is self-preferencing its own products on its store. The Commission has also announced that Meta has been given an additional six months to make Messenger interoperable with other messaging services. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cWe are not convinced that the solutions by Alphabet, Apple and Meta respect their obligations for a fairer and more open digital space for European citizens and businesses,\u201d EU Commissioner Thierry Breton said in a statement. \u201cShould our investigation conclude that there is lack of full compliance with the DMA, gatekeepers could face heavy fines.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Following the investigation, the Commission will tell each gatekeeper what must be done to address concerns, as well as what measures the regulator is planning to take. If found not to be in compliance, the Commission can fine each company up to 10 percent of their annual global revenue under the DMA, or even 20 percent in cases of \u201crepeated infringement.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Earlier this month, the six major tech companies designated as gatekeepers under the DMA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/3\/6\/24091592\/eu-dma-competition-compliance-deadline-big-tech-policy-changes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had to start complying with its rules<\/a>. These include having to give customers the option of changing default apps and uninstalling the gatekeeper\u2019s pre-installed applications, a ban on ranking a gatekeeper\u2019s first-party services higher than rivals, and allowing third-party app stores.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The EU\u2019s antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/eus-vestager-warns-about-apple-meta-fees-disparaging-rival-products-2024-03-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously indicated to <em>Reuters<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>that the Commission would be taking a closer look at how Apple is complying with the regulation over concerns that it may \u201cde facto not make it in any way attractive to use the benefits of the DMA.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Meta\u2019s \u201cpay or consent model\u201d has also been the subject of complaints from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/2\/29\/24086424\/metas-consent-or-pay-approach-to-privacy-targeted-by-eu-watchdogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">various EU watchdogs<\/a>. Last year, it launched a new paid tier for Facebook and Instagram in the EU that allows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/11\/10\/23955987\/instagram-facebook-without-ads-eu-subscription\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">users to pay \u20ac9.99 a month<\/a> to use each service without ads. The subscription was designed to be <a href=\"https:\/\/arc.net\/l\/quote\/pnfcpftw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a way to get user consent<\/a> to collect their data if they decide not to pay, but the Commission is concerned with the \u201cbinary choice\u201d that Meta is offering.
