Kathy Griffin was hit with death threats, \u201cdumped\u201d by the showbiz industry and had to shell out $1 million in legal fees over her infamous Donald Trump severed head gag<\/p>\n
The comic, 63, posted an image of herself in 2017 of her holding an effigy of the 77-year-old former \u2018Apprentice\u2019 judge\u2019s face dripping with what appeared to be fake blood \u2013 leading to her being fired by CNN and having stand-up shows axed after it provoked a furious reaction from Trump supporters.<\/p>\n
Kathy \u2013 who also went through the pain of filing from divorce from her husband Randy Bick in January \u2013 has now told Closer about the fallout over the row: \u201cMy industry dumped me. I was in the middle of a 50-city tour when that happened. Then, 25 cities all pulled out because of threats.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe government started the official investigation against me, and my lawyers said, \u2018This is a serious thing. They\u2019re serious about charging you with conspiracy.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cI spent a million dollars in lawyer fees. After that, I was stopped at every airport in the US and overseas.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThey take your phone, they take your passport. They wanted to end my career.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nShe added about death threats being sent to her home: \u201cThe stuff that came to my house! The FBI would show up and go, \u2018Miss Griffin, there is a credible threat against you. We have a duty to warn you.\u2019<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI mean, that was my life. I was enemy No 1. Thank God my fans stayed with me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nKathy also told how she got the strength to get through the ordeal from her parents.<\/p>\n
\nShe added: \u201cMy dad, John, lived to 90. My mom, Maggie, until 99. There was just something about my family. They were rough.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI\u2019m not going to lie. The expectations were, \u2018You show up at the dinner table. We\u2019re going to have political arguments. We\u2019ll talk about the day\u2019s news.\u2019<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI\u2019m grateful I was raised with this expectation. You had to show up and know what you\u2019re talking about. You couldn\u2019t show up at the dinner table and go, \u2018I\u2019ve never heard of that.\u2019<\/p>\n
\n\u201cMy dad would say, \u2018Read the paper.\u2019 I still do that today. Whatever city I\u2019m in, I open the show with local news.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
