The cast of Sweet Home Alabama<\/em> has made plenty of comments about the possibility of a sequel to the 2002 movie.<\/p>\n

The rom-com starring Reese Witherspoon<\/strong><\/a>, Josh Lucas<\/strong><\/a> and Patrick Dempsey<\/strong><\/a> was a box-office success after its release, and it has continued to charm fans over 20 years later. The story follows Melanie Smooter (Witherspoon), a successful fashion designer in New York City who adopted the last name \u201cCarmichael\u201d to hide her poor Southern roots. After wealthy politician Andrew Hennings (Dempsey) proposes, Melanie heads home to Alabama to finalize her divorce from Jake Perry (Lucas), her first love whom she\u2019s known since childhood.<\/p>\n

Melanie reconnects with her roots as her real past is exposed to Andrew, and she finds her way back to Jake.<\/p>\n

In addition to the top-billed actors, the supporting cast includes Dakota Fanning<\/strong>, who plays a 10-year-old Melanie, Fred Ward<\/strong>, Mary Kay Place<\/strong>, Jean Smart<\/strong>, Candice Bergen<\/strong>, Ethan Embry<\/strong> and Melanie Lynskey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In 2022, Witherspoon reacted to the idea of a sequel after Hoda Kotb<\/strong> asked whether the movie would ever have a \u201creboot\u201d during the actress\u2019 appearance on Today<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope so. I think that would be a great idea,\u201d Witherspoon said at the time. Cohost Jenna Bush Hager<\/strong> then asked whether the actress would star in the potential film.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe. I don\u2019t know. That sounds fun. Do you guys want me to do that?\u201d Witherspoon said before reacting to the hosts\u2019 positive reactions. \u201cOK, I\u2019ll make some calls,\u201d she joked.<\/p>\n

Witherspoon stars as Melanie Smooter, a New York City fashion designer who hides her Pigeon Creek, Alabama, origins by using the last name \u201cCarmichael.\u201d [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cLook, I would love to do the sequel<\/a>,\u201d Lucas said during a July 2023 appearance on SiriusXM\u2019s Pop Culture Spotlight With Jessica Shaw<\/em>. \u201cAnd I\u2019m saying that, like, laughingly, but Reese is, you know, I\u2019ve heard like, \u2018Oh, you can talk to her about stuff five years from now.\u2019 You know, she\u2019s a mogul.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor continued: \u201cAnd back when I was doing Sweet Home Alabama<\/em>, I, for some reason, remember telling the director or somebody speaking about her, but I said, \u2018I bet this woman ends up running a movie studio one day.\u2019 And she\u2019s even beyond that at this point. \u2026 I mean, it\u2019s extraordinary and not surprising either, at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tennant, Sweet Home Alabama<\/em>\u2019s director, developed a sequel concept where \u201cReese\u2019s character and Melanie Lynskey\u2019s character take their kids on a college tour,\u201d he told Business Insider<\/a> in 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cReese\u2019s daughter, Ava, went to school with my son, so I would see Reese on occasion. \u2026 When the movie got to, like, 13 to 14 years later, I started thinking where they would all be. Where are those four characters now: Melanie, Jake, Andrew and Melanie Lynskey\u2019s character, Lurlynn?\u201d Tennant explained. \u201cMy kids were going through college, so it got me thinking about a new generation of kids going to school and young love and what that would do to parents when they see their kids being real grown-ups. If the apple doesn\u2019t fall too far from the tree, what is Melanie\u2019s daughter like?\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Tennant admitted Witherspoon likely hasn\u2019t seen his script, adding, \u201cEven Reese\u2019s lawyer loved the treatment, but that\u2019s as close as I got.\u201d<\/p>\n
