They decided to turn the model around 180 degrees. Instead, the company assembles data about long term survivors of cancer, thus hoping to crack the code on what keeps people alive. It\u2019s now raised a \u20ac15 million Seed round led by Paris-based Sofinnova Partners. Other investors in this round included: Hitachi Ventures GmbH, Life Extension Ventures, Xavier Niel, and Olivier Pomel, CEO, and co-founder of Datadog.<\/p>\n<p>The startup will now use the money to build a \u2018cohort\u2019 of data to work out why certain cancer patients survive for a long time, even with highly aggressive forms of the disease. <\/p>\n<p>Cure51 was founded in March 2022 by Nicolas Wolikow and Simon Istolainen. Both had previously worked in five well-known oncology centers, such as the Gustave Roussy Institute in Paris and the Vall d\u2019Hebronin Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p>Wolikow told me: \u201cThere a plenty of companies licensing oncology databases, but their\u00a0databases don\u2019t include survivors, and don\u2019t present such a multi-omics granularity (single cell &amp; spatial) and they lack ethnic diversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also claims companies\u00a0like Flat\u00a0Iron\u00a0(Roche), Market\u00a0Scan\u00a0(IBM), Iqvia\u00a0offer\u00a0\u201csimple databases with clinical data and sparse genomic data.\u201d But molecular databases \u201cat multi-omics levels are required for drug discovery,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement Simon Turner, Partner at Sofinnova Partners commented: \u201cLooking at \u2018mechanisms of exceptional survival\u2019 is not a new concept, but Cure51 has taken this to a whole new level in terms of the scale of the endeavor, plus leveraging the latest in analytical techniques.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The tech industry has increasingly turned its guns on cancer in recent years. <\/p>\n<p>Alphabet <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/google-deepens-ai-push-health-150000314.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently<\/a> announced a number of initiatives to deploy AI models in the health care industry.
