Geraldine Viswanathan<\/strong><\/a> is a big fan of romantic comedies \u2014 but she\u2019d like to see more diverse casting in the genre.<\/p>\n

\u201cI definitely have an appetite for rom-coms, and, you know, an appetite for watching people who don\u2019t necessarily look like Sydney Sweeney<\/strong><\/a> and Glen Powell<\/strong><\/a> falling in love,\u201d Viswanathan, 28, said in an interview with The Independent<\/em><\/a> published on Friday, March 15. \u201cI want to revamp that and just see more diversity in these stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress shared that while she is \u201chere\u201d for the current \u201crom-com resurgence,\u201d she hopes more people of color will start to receive those opportunities.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the outside looking in, I do think it\u2019s a bit more unusual to see a woman of color in that role,\u201d the Miracle Workers<\/em> alum told the outlet. \u201cI just finished watching [the Netflix miniseries] One Day<\/em>. So I\u2019m like, \u2018Go off!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThere\u2019s just something about the perfect rom-com that has Us in our feels. Luckily, movies such as Which Brings Me to You and Upgraded have already proven why 2024 seems to be the year of romance. Based on the novel of the same name, Which Brings Me to You focuses on two strangers (Lucy Hale [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Viswanathan explained that despite progress being made in the industry for more inclusivity, there is still a disconnect.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think in many ways it does feel like a page is turned,\u201d the Blockers<\/em> star said. \u201cBut it still doesn\u2019t feel equal. It still feels like a specific experience to be a woman of color in this business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweeney, 26, and Powell, 35, starred in Anyone But You<\/em><\/a>, which hit theaters last year. The movie, which was a modern retelling<\/a> of William Shakespeare<\/strong>\u2019s Much Ado About Nothing<\/em>, earned $200 million at the worldwide box office.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou guys are the best,\u201d Sweeney, who was also a producer, wrote via her Instagram Story in January after learning of the movie\u2019s box office numbers<\/a>. \u201cI know I keep saying this, but I honestly can\u2019t thank you enough for continuously sharing your love for this film.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cRom coms are back baby!!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the success of their project, Powell teased that he was down to collaborate with Sweeney again<\/a> in the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you find somebody that you really jive with, Sydney is so easy to work with and so fun. We\u2019re definitely trying to find the next thing,\u201d he said to Variety<\/em> in February. \u201cPlease send us all the scripts you got. You know we\u2019re here for it. It\u2019s been really wonderful to read a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n
