Gene Wilder<\/a>\u2019: \u201cThe music was playing in the background \u2013 Ella Fitzgerald was singing \u2018Somewhere Over the Rainbow\u2019, and I was lying next to him and he sat up in bed and he said, \u2018I trust you.\u2019<\/p>\n\u201cAnd then he said, \u2018I love you.\u2019 That\u2019s the last thing he said.\u201d<\/p>\n
Karen added about how Gene amazed her by taking a swim in the days leading up to his death: \u201cHe hadn\u2019t walked alone (in a long time) and it was just a few days before he died, and I looked up and he was walking across the kitchen and then he said, \u2018I want to go swimming.\u2019<\/p>\n
\n\u201cHe dove into the pool liked he used to \u2013 I saw his little tush in the air \u2013 and I was awestruck.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd he took two strokes, he stood up, shook his head the way he always did to get the water out of his ear and said, \u2018That’s good.\u2019<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWent back to bed, and I think he just wanted to get in the pool one more time.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nGene \u2013 also famed for his roles in \u2018The Producers\u2019, \u2018Blazing Saddles\u2019 and \u2018Young Frankenstein\u2019 \u2013 first met speech consultant Karen while he was researching his 1989 movie \u2018See No Evil, Hear No Evil\u2019.<\/p>\n
\nThe pair did not go on a first date for more than a year after their original meeting, but their relationship started after Gene\u2019s third wife \u2013 comedian and actress Gilda Radner \u2013 died aged 42 in 1989 of ovarian cancer.<\/p>\n
\nKaren adds in the new film about the late comedian: \u201cGene was wonderful \u2013 he was the best husband I think anybody could ask for.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cTo love and be loved is the best gift anybody could ask for, and we had that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nKaren also says in the documentary, out in cinemas now in New York, she first noticed Gene was having memory troubles when he struggled to remember the title of \u2018Young Frankenstein\u2019, which she says was his favourite film.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cHe never really accepted that he had Alzheimer\u2019s, and maybe by the time we found out that\u2019s what it was \u2013 his hippocampus didn\u2019t let him remember.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cSo I\u2019m not sure that he ever knew. When I\u2019d see him slip away further from me I was sick to my stomach but I had to keep smiling and tell him that everything was okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
