On Thursday, the Republican candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/opinion\/op-ed\/laurieroberts\/2024\/03\/15\/mike-lindells-and-kari-lakes-explosive-new-evidence-goes-pffft\/72990063007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed<\/a> a petition to the Supreme Court arguing that electronic voting should be ruled unconstitutional, and this time around, she\u2019s got a new partner in crime: MyPillow founder and CEO <strong>Mike Lindell.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit stems from the leadup to the 2022 election, when Lake, along with local secretary of state candidate <strong>Mark Finchem<\/strong>, sued Maricopa County, seeking to ban electronic vote counters, which they alleged were theoretically \u201chackable.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The suit was dismissed in August of 2022, with a judge deeming the litigation a \u201cfrivolous\u201d waste of time and slapping Lake and Finchem\u2019s lawyers with $122,000 in sanctions. The penalty, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/12\/01\/arizona-cochise-county-kari-lake-sanctions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> Judge <strong>John Tuchi<\/strong>, would \u201cmake clear that the Court will not condone litigants \u2026 furthering false narratives that baselessly undermine public trust at a time of increasing disinformation about, and distrust in, the democratic process.\u201d Both Lake and Finchem went on to lose their elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">An appeals court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/opinion\/op-ed\/laurieroberts\/2023\/10\/16\/kari-lake-mark-finchem-lose-election-lawsuit\/71208716007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">upheld<\/a> the dismissal last October, ruling that the suit \u201crelies on a \u2018long chain of hypothetical contingencies\u2019 that have never occurred in Arizona.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But that has done little to damper Lake\u2019s enthusiasm for challenging election results, and now she\u2019s joined by Lindell, who has made a name for himself as one of the most high-profile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2023\/11\/dominion-fox-news-case-was-just-the-beginning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">promulgators<\/a> of false claims about voting machines. The MyPillow CEO spent much of last week hyping the lawsuit, making multiple appearances on <strong>Steve Bannon<\/strong>\u2019s War Room podcast\u2014in between plugs for his percale sheets\u2014to tease \u201cthe most explosive evidence ever\u201d that is \u201cgoing to save this country\u201d and \u201cshock the world,\u201d <em>The Arizona Republic<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/opinion\/op-ed\/laurieroberts\/2024\/03\/15\/mike-lindells-and-kari-lakes-explosive-new-evidence-goes-pffft\/72990063007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">According to the petition to the court, \u201cNew evidence from other litigation and public-record requests shows defendants made false statements to the district court regarding the safeguards allegedly followed to ensure the accuracy of the vote, on which the district court relied\u201d in its August 2022 decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThat enables petitioners to seek to amend their allegations on standing\u2026to show a non-speculative likelihood that the same harms will recur in future elections, which harms did indeed occur in the 2022 election,\u201d lawyers for Lake and Finchem argued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Yet local election officials and legal experts quickly cast doubt on whether the suit was much of anything. \u201cNothing new,\u201d Maricopa County Recorder <strong>Stephen Richer<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/opinion\/op-ed\/laurieroberts\/2024\/03\/15\/mike-lindells-and-kari-lakes-explosive-new-evidence-goes-pffft\/72990063007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> <em>The Arizona Republic<\/em> on Friday. \u201cSame old crazy. Zero percent chance the United States Supreme Court decides to spend its very limited time on something so crazy that it got sanctioned to the tune of $100,000-plus at the trial court level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Notre Dame law professor <strong>Derek Muller<\/strong> <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/azmirror.com\/2024\/03\/15\/kari-lake-and-mark-finchem-appeal-their-tabulator-case-to-the-u-s-supreme-court\/\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/azmirror.com\/2024\/03\/15\/kari-lake-and-mark-finchem-appeal-their-tabulator-case-to-the-u-s-supreme-court\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/azmirror.com\/2024\/03\/15\/kari-lake-and-mark-finchem-appeal-their-tabulator-case-to-the-u-s-supreme-court\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> <em>The Arizona Mirror<\/em> that the case is \u201ca longshot,\u201d given that Lake and Finchem have \u201cnot suffered any concrete or particularized harm.\u201d Muller predicted that the court would both decline to hear the case and offer no comment on its reasons for refusal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While there\u2019s little likelihood that the suit will end in legal success for Lake, it does seem to be setting the stage for her to sow doubt about the results of yet another election. \u201cThe weakness in voting infrastructure requires resolution before the 2024 election,\u201d wrote her attorneys. \u201cWithout resolution, election results in the numerous states with Dominion voting machines \u2014 at the very least \u2014 cannot be trusted.\u201d Dominion, it\u2019s worth remembering, is the voting systems company that Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2023\/04\/fox-dominion-settlement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agreed to pay<\/a> $787 for defamation after the network spread false claims about its machines during the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The irony is that Lake is making these claims as she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2024-02-25\/kari-lake-john-meghan-cindy-mccain-arizona-senate-whitewash-past\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attempts<\/a>\u2014rhetorically at least\u2014to appeal to the more moderate Republican voters she famously derided during her 2022 campaign, when she bragged about driving \u201ca stake through the heart of the McCain machine.\u201d After Arizona Senator <strong>Kyrsten Sinema<\/strong> announced she wasn\u2019t seeking re-election earlier this month, Lake <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/03\/06\/sinema-arizona-senate-00145204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> McCain \u201can incredible veteran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAnybody who wants to vote for me, anybody who in the past hasn\u2019t, I\u2019ve extended an olive branch,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to come together.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/kari-lake-supreme-court-electronic-voting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kari Lake, who is currently running for US Senate in Arizona, is still refusing to let her 2022 gubernatorial loss go.
