Starship Home, <\/em>a cozy mixed-reality game for the Meta Quest 3<\/a>, is trying to get to the heart of \u201cwhat makes a game meaningful in mixed reality.\u201d That\u2019s according to developer Doug North Cook, who wrote on Reddit<\/a> that the game, which turns your environment into a custom spaceship and you into an intergalactic horticulturist, is indie studio Creature\u2019s \u201cfirst answer to that question.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n A Meta Quest blog post<\/a> says players will customize their starship by \u201cstrategically placing virtual windows, control panels, and other components\u201d in their room. Outside the windows, the game\u2019s trailer shows you\u2019ll see things like space creatures, planets, cloud-tops, and travel animations as you leave planets. When players land on a planet, they\u2019ll collect plant clippings and nurture them aboard their ship. The game uses the Quest 3\u2019s automatic room meshing<\/a>, so you won\u2019t have to do any manual blocking to tell the headset where things are in your space.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Starship Home<\/em>\u2019s story puts players in charge of exploring planets and saving alien flora from a \u201csinister blight that threatens plant life across the galaxy.\u201d Other aspects of the game will include entering the plants\u2019 dreams, navigating with a star chart, interplanetary space jumps, and \u201cunraveling the mystery\u201d of the sickness afflicting the plants, according to Creature\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The whole thing sounds like it could be very fun \u2014 if it\u2019s done right. The developer doesn\u2019t seem to say whether your spaceship persists across play sessions (it sounds like it might, given Cook\u2019s Reddit reply<\/a> saying there will be save files \u201cso you can each have your own Starship\u201d). If it does, that could give you a real reason to actually put the headset on every day.
