Dr. Catherine Fox is back and better than ever for Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em><\/a> season 20 \u2014 and, per Debbie Allen<\/strong>, she\u2019s whipping the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital\u2019s interns into shape.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis season is going to be something,\u201d Allen, 74, told Us Weekly<\/em> exclusively while promoting Prevent Blindness and Regeneron\u2019s Gr8 Eye Movement<\/a> campaign on Thursday, March 14. \u201cTonight\u2019s show gets off with a blast.\u201d<\/p>\n

The season 19 finale, which aired in May 2023, saw Kim Raver<\/strong>\u2019s Teddy Altman collapse in the operating room. With husband Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd<\/strong>) at her side, the interns are left alone with a body on the operating table.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe interns, even in our teases, they\u2019re in trouble,\u201d Allen teased. \u201cThat means Catherine Fox is on their butt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWith countless episodes of television available to the public at all times, it is a major milestone when a show airs 100 episodes or more. Shows like Riverdale found that success by gaining an audience based on their connection to the Archie Comics. As Riverdale prepared to air its 100th episode, creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa noted [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Grey\u2019<\/em>s season 20<\/a> has been shortened to 10 episodes in the wake of the SAG-AFTRA strike<\/a>, which came to an end in November 2023. But according to Allen, each episode is \u201cpacked with wonderful new characters, great stories and real medical situations.\u201d<\/p>\n

This time around, Grey\u2019s has some major changes. Their new showrunner, Meg Marinis<\/strong>, is \u201camazing,\u201d Allen told Us<\/em>. And while Ellen Pompeo<\/strong> is no longer a series regular, the presence of the actress who\u2019s played Meredith Grey since 2005 is still felt. (Allen revealed that she was filming with Pompeo before speaking with Us<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

Along with playing Catherine, a role she\u2019s held since 2011, Allen is \u201cbusy directing\u201d and \u201chelping to supervise casting scripts\u201d while on set.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can say that there are some dynamic medical situations that are going to happen. Some are extraordinary that you don\u2019t even have a clue about it,\u201d she continued. \u201cWe learn about it as we go sometimes, because the writers are always out there looking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Real doctors are always close by on the Grey\u2019s<\/em> set to offer input into the medical scenarios. Something, Allen told Us<\/em> is intentional.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people learn about their medical situations from Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em>. They\u2019ve learned a lot,\u201d the actress added. \u201cSo, I know how important it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThroughout its lengthy run, Grey\u2019s Anatomy has said goodbye \u2014 and then hello again \u2014 to countless popular characters. As the first series regular to exit from the ABC medical drama, fans were surprised when Isaiah Washington (Preston Burke) returned to Grey\u2019s Anatomy in 2014 \u2014 seven years after he was fired for using a [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Along with the medical story lines on Grey\u2019s<\/em>, Allen always keeps her own health top of mind. She teamed up with Prevent Blindness and Regeneron to launch the Gr8 Eye Movement in September 2023, which aims to raise awareness about the risk of developing serious retinal diseases like wet age-related macular degeneration (wAMD), diabetic macular edema (DME) and diabetic retinopathy (DR).<\/p>\n

\u201cTruth has become a very subjective thing. To get information that is really right and honest and good, is important so people can protect themselves,\u201d Allen said. \u201cRetinal diseases are very serious and there are things that people can do. \u2026 There are things that you can do and we need to not just accept that it\u2019s a normal part of aging.\u201d<\/p>\n
